Fun drinks to encourage a KETO Brother struggling with his fasting skills

#1

My workout partner is also a friend, who used to be a student of mine when I taught Public School. I am 19 years his senior, yet functionally, we are accountability partners. He struggles with fasting. His wife isn’t really on board with Low Carbing in any serious capacity. (YET!..) :smirk:

I got him doing iced coffee with cream and Stevia, and want to get him doing some bouillon cubes and bone broth.

Personally, I make an iced drink…up to 3 times a day, of Apple Cider Vinegar, with one teaspoon each of 100% Cranberry Juice and Lemon juice, Stevia and powedered Ginger for some extra fizz.

It is technically not true fasting with these particular drinks, but he struggles so bad with water only fasts.

So.

(My partial list)

  1. Coffees (iced and hot) with HWC
  2. Iced tea (Stevia or other sweetener optional)
  3. Hot tea with various spices for variety.
  4. Apple Cider Vinegar drinks
  5. Bouillon
  6. Bone Broth

Fasting is like a skill. Or like a muscle, that gets stronger with use. Using a crutch of some kind seems okay to me. YMMV…

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Stan

I don’t know if these would be considered fun, but I’ve recently been trying out various drinks that taste good and seem filling, or at least distracting.

Fresh citrus peel (orange or lemon, or perhaps lime) and fresh ginger with apple cider vinegar to taste, with sweetener of choice. I use sucralose (not Splenda with fillers). Grind in a blender, let steep, strain, fill with a combo of water and carbonated water so it’s not too fizzy. Very satisfying. I store this in small bottles that held diet coke so they can be resealed - and so I can make several bottles at a time.

Fresh lime peel/zest with small amount of lime juice in water, heated, with a tiny bit of sweetener. Simple but very good.

A brew of herbs and seasonings steeped/simmered in hot water - things such as Italian seasoning, sage, chili powder, pepper corns, garlic, dehydrated onion, a tiny bit of ACV. Also cumin, and/or curry for distinctive flavors. Probably coconut cream too, but I haven’t tried that yet. A slice of dehydrated tomato (perhaps a tiny bit of t. paste - 0.7g/tsp) might be nice to add to the brew.

The herb brew also extends bone broth quite nicely. Beef or chicken. You could probably add an acceptable bullion cube or liquid if desired.

Right now I am sipping on the herb brew with a bit of commercial bullion in it. Very good. A nice change from hot tea (my ‘normal’ drink)

@Alexia This is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.

When I have struggled with my appetite, coffee, tea, bullion and etc, have been very helpful. A tasty and satisfying TREAT beats a CHEAT every day of the week.

Thanks.

Umm, I’ve always had amazing results fasting 3-4 times a year for 10 years now (for health reasons, not weightloss).

If I struggle, I always have a TINY dash of apple juice in a glass of water.

I believe the health benefits of fasting sooooo outweigh the occasional “crutch”, as long as that’s all it is. It should NOT be about “cheating” tho. It should be a crutch to get you through another 2 or 3 days of fasting.

My longest fast has been 3 and a half weeks, but I could’ve gone longer.

I see no point in “torturing” yourself needlessly during a fast. It’s not about being a hero.

It’s about finding a sensible, pragmatic way of getting the amazing health benefits from fasting.

Fasting should be enjoyable. It should feel great.

If it feels bad/ your friend is struggling massively, then I agree that he needs a crutch to get into the zone.

Ha! We were just discovering the flavored Now brand Stevia products last week at local stores. Couldn’t find Coconut on the shelf, so I’ll order some.

Thanks Khan…
