Frustrated lacking consistency

#1

Hello! I’m super frustrated. I can’t even believe I’m writing this post. I’ve been Keto for over a year, I am passionate about it. I signed up and paid to have personalized coaching with Jason Fung’s IDM, since October. I have gotten no where. I started at 186 and weighed that where I am this morning. I am not consistent, I know that’s my problem. How does anyone become consistent? Desire for change strong enough to be persistent and consistent? Is that what I lack? I feel such a failure? I can start my week all gung ho, I can fast for 24 hours easy, I’ve done 3 days multiple times. My pitfalls… I like wine and light beer. I don’t falter with carbs in any other way. I work out 3 times a week at a minimum. I can’t lose just eating Keto like others I see whose weight falls off just be cutting out the carbs. I’m a size 12/14, I would like to be a 6/8 which would be around 150 for me. I know it’s achievable, I just wish I could figure out how. Sorry this is a sob story, but I have a feeling I’m not alone… Help! Thanks in advance :sob: If it matters I’m a 54 year old woman

So try this;

Do exactly Keto for 2 weeks, Followed by 4 days of fasting. Meaning no beer or wine.

You’ll have results with that commitment, maybe that is what you need to help make the life choice.

Thanks for your reply. I will try this. It makes sense, with this I’m sure to see some results, then commitment and consistency follow?

I think the strict keto suggestion is great.

What you are trying to avoid is a negative feedback loop.

  • At 54 (unlike 24) alcohol creates significant stress through lack of sleep, hangover and being upset with yourself the next day. This leads to stress hormones getting the upper hand so that, not matter how good your diet is, it is counterbalanced (which equals no weight loss). All of this (sleep, stress and no weight loss) push you toward the bottle where you can get away from this bad reality for a while.

What you want is a good feedback loop.

  • Try the strict keto suggestion but, before you start, journal like crazy about the last couple of times you turned to alcohol. Yes, 3 hours in the evening of altered state was good but what about the hangover - trying to face the day on really broken sleep and, of course, no progress toward the clothes size you want. The second you think about wine or beer - read your journal - look at where you will be the next morning and decide a movie, a walk - anything, is better.

Thank you Rob, I will also try your suggesting with journaling. I’d like to clarify however… I drink occasionally, not everyday. I do sleep 8 hours a night. 8pm to 4am, at work at 6am. I may drink a glass of wine one or two nights a week. 2-4 beers one maybe two weekend evenings. I’m hung over once a year at the most. So it’s not volume or frequency, but is it at my age? I like to drink socially, and I’m just looking at my calendar thinking I will have to not drink for Memorial day weekend! The real question is, what’s more important? This is an eye opener :flushed:

Helena, Thanks so much for your post. I am so with you on this one! I hope you get many good suggestions so that we can all benefit from reading them. Consistency is now, and has always been my downfall. I could somewhat get away with the on/off pattern of wise food choices vs poor food choices when I was younger, but not any more. Like you, I just want to be a healthy body weight. Like you, I desire and strive to make healthy eating habits, and I start “perfect” and then at some point, I just cave to the desire for junk food nirvana. I have spent several years eating somewhere on the Low Carb spectrum, and the last year and a half eating ketogenic. My junk food cravings are not present most of the time, but I have thoughts and memories of tastes that just pop up every now and then. I resist, resist, resist, resist, (sometimes for MONTHS), then one day, BANG, I give in and eat a bunch of junk food. My progress is so slow when I’m doing all the right things, it just starts feeling like self denial with little reward. I really hope you get lots of positive suggestions on this topic. I’ll bet many of us would love to conquer this one!

Thanks! I’m glad I’m not alone! I’ll be more grateful when I’m not alone conquering this!

I don’t want to be that guy, but that sounds quite a bit to me. I thought beer was a no-no on keto?
Doesn’t beer have a lot of carbs? Adding up your numbers it seems like you could have
six drinks a week?
I listened to the 2ketodudes podcast about alcohol and they mentioned that even one glass of wine can
stall weight loss.

I like a cold beer myself, especially on a nice hot day, but I made the decision not to drink because being healthy and losing weight is more important to me.

I’m glad you’re that guy! Your probably, no, definitely correct… I should just give it up. The beer is Michelob ultra… 2.6 gm carbs in 12 ounce. So I would include those numbers in my macros. I know I’ve heard when you consume alcohol your body will burn the alcohol calories first and every thing else will go on the back burner.

Ok, took the advice… Day 3 strict Keto, using mfp to log macros, doing well. No alcohol, last night went to an education dinner at a very nice restaurant for work… Alcohol was served and everyone was drinking, I stuck with 6 glasses of club soda! YAY me! :raised_hands:… My first hurdle, and I’m glad I did it. Just wanted to let those know who offered advice I’m listening and acting upon it. Planning on two weeks strict Keto followed by 4 days of fasting.
