Friend asked for help

His father has multiple issues … but he specifically asked me to help him come up with a list of foods that fight inflammation … of course, I right away said “KETO” … but, his dad is going on 90 … and set in his ways … yada yada…

So, tonight I thought, “Okay, Muffins, just for laughs let’s google that”… and you know what comes up? Basically the list of “approved” foods for keto… OMG! lol … who knew (cue sarcasm)

  • tomatoes.
  • olive oil .
  • green leafy vegetables, such as spinach , kale , and collards.
  • nuts like almonds and walnuts.
  • fatty fish like salmon , mackerel, tuna , and sardines.
  • fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries , and oranges.

BUT … Just to be clear y’all … THIS way of eating DOESN’T WORK, and is DANGEROUS. ROFL

And now my question for the class … how do you convince older people to change their life long habits AND (more important) go AGAINST their doctor’s advice?

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #2

You forgot that it is also unsustainable, so apparently we’ll have to stop eating this way, and it will still kill us anyway!

You don’t. You have to present them with an alternative reality and let them come to their own conclusions. Your example might be more powerful than you might think, especially if you’ve been very successful with the keto woe. It can also be powerful in a different way when what their doctors have been telling them isn’t working.

For some, they’ll get it. For others, you’ll plant the seed and they’ll eventually come up with it and think it was their own idea from the start. Others will die believing their doctors are deity.

People don’t listen to their doctor’s advice, anyway. They follow it selectively as they get older and less healthy, but by then doctor’s are just trying to put a band aid on festering corpse (sorry for the imagery, but it’s almost Halloween!). In any case, I don’t know that I’d ever explicitly suggest they go against a doctor’s specific advice, usually since it pertains to a particular set of circumstances that you or I may not be fully aware of, but I get your gist; how do you make old people understand that there’s a lot of misinformation and lobbying that leads to what constitutes the official governmental regulations which guides doctors’ advice?

Short answer? No idea. Hopefully these alleged “old people” still have the sense to read and research and learn and assimilate new information. Because if they’re in the stage of “oh I gotta take a pill for my heart, that’s my water pill, check my sugars for the diabeetus,” then it’s probably too late. If they’re in the “I take atorvastatin to reduce my LDL cholesterol and Lisinopril 10mg daily to keep my systolic blood pressure under 130,” then there’s still hope.

Love the name “Muffins Biscotti” … good name for a keto mobster’s girlfriend.

Dude is 90 years old…he needs a time machine, not a diet.

(Taleisha Collins) #7

LOL don’t we all!?!

(Taleisha Collins) #8

Thanks  We saw it long ago on a food stand during one of our walks… My “boyfriend’s” (husband) name is Roquefort Beignet … lol

Love the imagery! Woot Halloween!

I don’t want to suggest against a doctor’s advice … this man is on a yacht sized amount of meds for all his different issues… and they are MANY. The biggest is that his joints have all seized up and he can’t get out of bed… :frowning:
And, my friend’s parents are the type that still think a potato is the same thing as the boxed crap called “mashed potatoes” … he has tried to get them to switch to whole foods… but, I think he is just beating against a brick wall.

I will give him the information and he can do what he will with it

So, once Roquefort made you an honest woman, you became carb queen Muffins Biscotti-Beignet.

Indeed

Although, I am no longer a carb chugger
