Eggcellent!
I think my next house will definitely be in an area that does not have an HOA, or at least one that does not restrict providing oneās own food through responsible micro-farming.

There really is no comparison to store eggs either. Also I think the blue ones taste better
May I ask how much you pay your egg producers? A coworker recently mentioned that she keeps 5 chickens and ādoes anyone want organic eggs?ā Iām like YES!! But I donāt know a ballpark on what I should offer to pay her for that.
Arenāt these gorgeous? Free range organically fed heritage chickens raised by a neighbor - and the best eggs youāll every taste. We pay $4 CDN per dozen, which I consider a steal!
Thatās what I thought the first time we bought themā¦I took tons of pictures with my macro lens to capture their glory before we ate them. Itās like a carton full of Easter eggs!
Oh my! Iād love to see these anywhere near Edmontonā¦By some fleeting chance, were they?
Our chicken girls are a bit slow getting started laying again this spring, but the āsurpriseā ducks that hatched last year have started laying. If you get a chance, try some duck eggs. Hyuuuuuge yolks, very rich & creamy. If you appreciate good chicken eggs, you just might go bonkers over duck eggs!
We sell our excess eggs for US $2 per half dozen.
It is such a shame to have to give up eggs for the winter, but I want to avoid girls who are chowing on unknown grains including corn, soy, and who knows what type of vegetable oil!
I have a co-worker who brought in the feed bag ingredient list, and it contained the above ingredients. No thanks.
Well thatās disappointing⦠Now we know⦠Tapping out of them during winter monthsā¦
Iāve not raised chickens yet. I buy them from a neighbor currently for $1.50 / dozen when she advertises a surplus on craigslist. I normally take 6-10 dozen at a time. I havenāt asked how she feeds them, I donāt really care. Iām sure they are better cared for than commercial chickens. I figure an egg that comes out of any chicken is a helluva lot healthier than anything that comes out of a Kellogās box.
I would think with a little investigating you could find organically raised chicken feed.
I love buying local eggs. I have a friend that owns a farm stand a few miles from me (our kids are in the same class at school) and I always get my eggs from her. This morning she went right out to the coop and grabbed me 2 dozen, at least half of them still warm from chicken butt. I also get them unwashed because it saves her time having to wash them and unwashed eggs do not have to be stored in the refrigerator, freeing up more space in there for my bacon!
Yummy photo. You can practically see the vitamin K2 in that orange yolk.
(Well, itās really the beta-carotene that you see, but they travel together.)
I dont believe chickens who are fed some scratch (corn, grain, etc) to be a bad thing because chickens would naturally eat that stuff anyway.
They are omnivorous ans of the āeat anything they seeā type of animal.
Including frogs, snakes, flies, dragonfliesā¦
However if fed ENTIRELY scratch it is not healthy for them.
I dont think winter eggs are bad, maybe less good (depending on what they are eating) but not outright unhealthy.
Find a local farm and buy some if youre all that worried about it.
Note: the reason that cows fed grain is bad is because cows are NOT meant to eat it. So it causes inflammation for them and that is stored in the meat. Chickens easily handle digesting corn and grain without issue so it does not cause issue so long as they are getting proper feed as well.
Just thought Iād add a little colour to this topic.
My neighbour has organic pastured chickens, (so Iām privileged to unlimited free eggs). This photo clearly shows the difference between pastured eggs and Walmarts standard white eggs.
Bottom line: Choose high quality eggs on Keto.
Eggs are a lot like meat. Learn what the labels mean and do some homework. Buy the best you can afford, but donāt pass judgement on others who cannot afford the best. Mass produced animal products are still some of the best foods in the grocery store. Donāt discourage people from upgrading to great food, just because they canāt afford the very best!
