Found a substitute for French fries

(Lisa Dolan) #1

I’m new here and been doing keto for about 4 months… I’m not losing like I used to but I thought I’d share this substitute that tastes almost the same as fries…CELERY ROOT!!! Not normal celery look at your grocers for celery root. Cut it up, wash it and place it on parchment, I put a little garlic powder and Himalayan salt and cook it at 450 for 30 mins in the oven flipping halfway…OMG amazing!!! Dip it in your favourite dip or sugar free ketchup!

AMAZING!

I’ll have to try this! A note though, per cup of celery root there’s 11g carbs

I don’t know, @HuggaMonkey… The only possible substitute for French friends (and all their lovely cheeses) might be German friends, 'cause of their 50 different varieties of wurst. Well, maybe Spanish friends (chorizo). Or English friends (Devonshire cream).

Sigh. Gotta love keto…

I’m sorry but french fries have no substitute. I eat them on the rare occasion, heavily salted and dipped in mayo.

Good to know…thanks!!! Still lost 2lbs eating them but I’ll keep an eye on that!!!

It seems that I’ve always loved things that come in greasy, brown paper bags.

For a true french fry connoisseur, there is no substitute. But there are low carb veggies that approximate it. I conducted a taste test using diakon, rutabaga, turnip, and jicama. I sliced them into french fry size and fried them in oil. The three taste testers detected mild differences when sampling them side by side, but decided it was not remarkable enough to choose a favorite using taste as a criteria. Quantity (how much could be eaten on diet) was more important. Using carb count, diakon was the winner at 8g for 8 oz.

These veggies make great breakfast potatoes (diced into small squares) and sauteed with onions, garlic, and bell peppers.

OK, I’m done. Back to my fast.

I’ve shredded radishes before and made “potato” pancakes.

That sounds great!!!

I’ve been wanting to try out daikon radishes for “potato” cakes. I’ve used shredded/riced cauliflower mixed with the common little red radishes but have never gotten to try the daikons. Do they have a more mild taste?

8g for 8oz, that’s not bad. A reasonable serving would be maybe half that, wouldn’t it?

I use Jicama for fries, water chestnut/Bamboo shoot substitute in stir frys, grated raw on salads, and as an apple subsitute

I think I know this a celeric.

That’s a starchy Vegetable. Should stick to the veggies that grow above ground.
