Forgive my pet peeve

The beauty of autocorrect is that it has led to my 15yo and I having a secret text language. We have permanently replaced the appropriate word with the autocorrect version.

I have the same issue with fort and forte.

Lose v loose. Than v then. It’s v its. Their, there, they’re. Myriad…so many things to choose from. :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: I just roll with it.

No your not, you posted on something that bugged you in a respectful manner. And then acknowledged that you made a error. David Unwin has an awesome way of putting it, in his words (if I get them perfectly correct) “You didn’t make a mistake, you learned something that didn’t work”.

Had you SHOUTED at someone in a post that might elevate you to the rank of jerk.

I’m on you side, I often sign emails with,

Pedantic Dave.

Cheers.

Dammit, “You’re” not “your” Even I can’t get it right all the time.

(Chris) #28

I’m still your pal, friend.

Mine (especially on weight loss sites) is ‘lose’ and ‘loose.’

You aren’t going to ‘loose’ weight. But if you lose weight, your pants will get loose.

Then there is ‘less’ and ‘fewer.’ It feels like I am only one of twelve or so people that know the difference.

Weren’t you just the OP on a two hundred post long thread demanding newbies use the search function.

Loose in place of lose has made me insane for decades.

(Sophie) #33

All I’m gonna say, is that when I see “these ones” and “those ones” it makes me wanna strangle people! :smirk:

Nicely said. Language evolves.

Though honestly, you don’t know what fun is until you have been married to the grammar/word police for 40 years.

affect/effect
enquire/inquire
fell swoop/foul swoop
vicious circle/vicious cycle

oooh… endless fun

I also like a bit of creativity and spontaneous word construction.
‘offandonable’ is a great favourite. Although I rarely manage to insert it into casual conversation.

Happy to see you that others have found value in this thread despite my pomposity.

One of my absolute pet peeves is the way everyone (mostly texting, but still) types out everything in all lower case letters with zero punctuation.

Sorry…English nerd here from way back…Found out correcting the grammar in the notes your friends give you just leads to no friends…LOL

#38

Alot is mine! It is two freaking words!!

(Shayne) #39

OH! Less and Fewer gets me all the time! I actually correct people in public with that one. I really try not to, but it just pops out of my mouth without a thought!

(Teresa (turtle)) #40

Another bothersome mix up is much and many…

Wow!
