Foods with Carbs You Wouldn't Expect

#1

HWC = .8g carbs per serving (they often say 0 because it’s less than 1g)
Full Fat Yogurt/Cottage cheese = fair amount of carbs
Wine = decent amount, mostly drink liquor and soda now
Eggs = .6g / egg
Spinach = 3.6g / 100g

Any other foods? Anyone else find out the hard way?

Actually yogurt has less carbs than declared due to the bacteria that eats the sugar in it. I learned that on the Dudes podcast, I believe.

Raw spinach is 1.4g/100g though!

(Brian) #4

So, have you ever eaten 100g of raw spinach? That’s a lotta chewin’.

#5

Haha. I was just keeping the units the same as the original post. I’m not sure I even know what 100g of spinach looks like, however, the main point I wanted to make (because it really surprised me when I started noticing it) is that nutritional values change based on cooked/raw.

:slightly_smiling_face: I often get a bag of spinach and a bag of lettuce/carrots/cabbage, mix half of each in a big bowl (4 quarts/3.7 liters) and have me a big old salad. Fills the bowl, and that includes ~ 5 oz/140g spinach.

I find that it is less about the numbers, and more about the fat and fibre the carbs are eaten with - but then my main priority has always been blood glucose control rather than keeping the carb g to a set number.

For instance, yogurt in a bowl, by itself, may increase my blood glucose a little (depends on portion size, of course! )

The same yog, in a curry, with fibrous veg and maybe a dash of coconut cream, would have far less blood glucose impact.

I’m thankful that we can be keto without giving up carbs completely. I don’t really worry a whole lot about the carbs in an egg or in my creamed spinach. I’m aware of the carbs in my Greek yogurt but even those are not really a problem.

Keto types tend to keep 20g of carbs in mind as the daily limit though I know of the likes of Phinney and a few others have mentioned numbers closer to 50g of carbs a day being pretty normal for nutritional ketosis, for some people, even more.

Maybe it depends on where you are in your journey and how messed up you are. I’ve never been of a mind to be so restrictive as to deny myself 30 or 40, maybe even 50 g of carbs and call it a normal day. Some people would think of that as a total disaster, falling off the wagon, sign up for 3 days of fasting and penance.

I rather like the idea that the occasional cup of carrots with an otherwise fairly keto meal is really just not a problem. (That’s about 7g of carbs, if anyone cares.) Or the occasional small sweet potato. Or the occasional small serving of beans (especially fresh out of the garden).

Maybe this general attitude is one of the reasons I find keto so easy. There is room for a LOT of variety in eating. Yes, sometimes I eat things that aren’t exactly keto. In my day-to-day eating, it is keto. But I’m not afraid of a few carbs here and there, really, I’m not. I just strive to keep them low while thoroughly enjoying my food. I think I do a pretty good job of that. The scale certainly seems to think so.

If you really and truly have to be ultra restrictive to make keto work for you, then I suppose you have to do what you have to do. If you don’t, maybe cut yourself enough slack to enjoy even more varieties of food, in moderation, of course, and at least mindful of the carbs you are consuming.

Just my take… which is just my own experience. Yours may be different.

Fair enough. I have an occasional salad but I haven’t got the teeth to be able to gnaw through that much roughage on a regular basis. Probably affects my perspective.

One of these days, I’m gonna get some new teeth… my days/years/decades as a vegan / vegetarian were NOT kind to my oral health.

not sure about spinach

But this person ate 120 eggs. wouldn’t qualify for keto

lol

(Doug) #11

Omar, amazing video.

The winner was Joey Chestnut, who actually ate 141 eggs in the 8 minutes, new world record. Going with 50g/1.75oz per egg, that’s 7+kg/15.4lbs of eggs…

I’ve seen Joey Chestnut in action. The man is impressive.

I used to go to Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island. The 135-pound Japanese kid Kobayashi crushed Joey that day, but Joey came back to beat him several times and set new record. And for the record, William “The Refrigerator” Perry couldn’t hold a candle to either Joey or Kobayashi.

For me, the problem with whipping cream and yogurt is dairy addiction, even if the cream is lactose free. I’m satisfied with a “serving” of meat or whatever, but with heavy cream or yogurt I tend to keep going until the whole container is gone.

I know that yogurt is supposed to have fewer carbs than what the label shows, but it still isn’t a safe food for me. Cheese is no problem.

As for the occasional small sweet potato (mentioned by @Bellyman), I consider that a necessity, and it doesn’t seem to mess me up. Or maybe it does; I have experienced a stall. . . . But it doesn’t make me hungry.

I do that same “shimmy” move when I eat eggs too…which can be dangerous if I’m drinking coffee at the same time.

(Anne Brodie) #15

Meats that have sugar or fillers added. Bacon and sausage often have sugar. Especially maple flavor. Someone gave me a box of frozen burgers that had fillers. What a waste of carbs without knowing it!

#16

Thank you for posting this. I was not aware of carbs in eggs.

#17

If you make your own and let it ferment for a full 24 hours there will be basically no sugar left. Same with creme fraiche if you let it go for 48.

(Empress of the Unexpected) #18

When I started Keto I was drinking glasses of whipping cream. That didn’t work… I have a serious dairy addiction.

How hard is it to make yogurt? I love my Fage Greek yogurt.
