Food tips for Colitis

colitis

Ok, so my husband has Ulcerative Colitis. It runs in the family, his brother has Chrone’s disease. Right now, he’s following the diet given to him at the hospital, full of rice and refined grains and such. He knows he needs to go low carb again, but he does not want to eat items that are going to cause a flare-up of symptoms (ie, stomach pain, diarrhea, etc.). So far we gave him ok with green peppers, onions, and boiled green beans and carrots. We need more veggies (we tried carnivore, which helped his stomach, but wasn’t appealing to him after day 3.) Does anyone here have Colitis or Chrones with some advice for foods that are ok and foods that aren’t?

Hi Robin
I have colitis and diverticulitis. Unfortunately it’s in my family too. For my personal experience. It’s all custom to each Individual. What I do,is try certain foods. To see if there is a reaction. Stress is another component. A lot of symptoms have erased if I stay on Keto. When I mess up when I have a flare up. Sorry not much help.

I suggest you consider Discordance leading to autoimmune reactions being the culprit. I suggest more of a Paleodiet approach, starting with the elimination of Grains, Beans, and Dairy.

I also recommend reading Cordain’s “Cereal Grain’s: Humanity’s Double Edged Sword”. It will give you understanding of the concept of Evolutionary Discordancy.

Many people find that a ketogenic diet helps with the symptoms of Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel, and other diseases of the colon. Anecdotal experience from these forums suggests that when dietary carbohydrate is limited to ketogenic levels, fibre actually becomes a detriment instead of an aid to bowel health. As Dr. Jason Fung likes to put it, “Carbohydrate is the poison, and fibre is the antidote. If you’re not taking the poison, why bother with the antidote?”
