It’s been 9 months of doing keto! In these 9 months I’ve had revelations: I came to know that my body which had always been overweight could have bones and muscles. I came to know that I could fast for 23 hours. I came to know that ACV changes your relationship with acidity. I came to know that whey protein pastries taste better than regular buttercream. Wait, what?
I’m addicted to cooking. Since I’m doing OMAD I have one luxurious meal a day, usually ending with a divine dessert. I mean who can watch all these fantastic keto versions of regular junk food and not make them?
Everytime I watch the perfect omurice, the wonderful fettuccine and red velvet cake, I witness the keto caramel sauce dripping down the spoon or the faint crackling of the keto crackers, I seem to be overjoyed and excited and end up overeating and over complicating my meal.
Waking up, the first thing I do is think about food. Unexplored recipes or victorious experiments from the past. There’s the burger, the cake, the cookies, the mousse, the bread, the pasta, the entire army of good junk.
I’m taking a resolution. For one week, I will not make a single keto junk food. I mean seriously, I’m slowly not craving pancakes. I’d rather have two whole poached eggs thank you.
Watching recipes all day and making batches of chocolates and consuming a lot of erythritol has left me bloated and tired. So goodbye, pumpkin pie! Adios my darling whey protein desserts! I will see you, sporadically.
Honestly, ever since I’ve been unwell I’m thinking a lot about food porn. Simple keto, here I come!
Food Porn: fighting my addiction
When I started I assumed I would have to make replacements for my carb addictions. I bought lots of stuff like psyllium husk powder, all the flours, etc. bags of mozzarella for fathead pizzas etc. I made bread, buns, cakes, puddings etc. and it was a ton of effort for mediocre results (not just driven by my cooking skills). It kept my mind off the adaptation etc. but I have made very little since the first 6 weeks. I am down to 90-second mug bread or anything I can mix into whipped cream. The simpler I keep it, the better I do. I am currently doing bacon and eggs (and cheese) for 2 meals a day and the weight is falling off. I’ll get back to the replacements eventually for diversity but if it ain’t broke…
Hey… I’m down to quick microwave meals too. My whey protein isolates are sitting in their boxes for the time being. I’m doing chicken broth, some pieces, some skin and eggs today. Yes the simpler it is the better I feel. Thanks for reaching out!
I’ve been on this for about 4.5 months. I enjoy standing over the stove and putting stuff in the oven slathered in sauces but now I’m focused on making my meat and veg more interesting.
And bacon & eggs whenever I want.
Just a friendly quote for you, since you mention it as an addiction: (picture a tug of war) --“Let go or be dragged”
You sound like one very good cook! Me, I could not even think about that level of ability in the kitchen.
I’m coming round to this way as well. Ive been reducing the “keto dessert” making, I do tend to have an almond milk shake with 100% baking type cacoa powder and some stevia. I will ween my self off that as well at some point.

In previous attempts to make this a way of life, rather than a temporary solution, I have mucked about with replacement foods, trying to find the best things to feed a need for sweets and starches. In previous successful attempts, I have kind of ditched those things, to instead focus my cooking on things that are naturally keto friendly. I came to think of these replacement sweets and starches as ersatz versions that just kept me craving sweet and thinking I could eat pasta.
I came up with a cooking mantra:
Great steaks, not ersatz cakes.
My cooking has come a long way in the 11 years when I came up with that the first time, so it’s rich stews not fake brews, great chops, not weak pops. Lots of different ways to make it work. But learning to eat pure keto is part of what worked for me.
Thanks! I’m on a similar journey. I firmly believe that one day I’ll end a meal not craving that “just a spoon full of sugar”. How about I start it from tomorrow? No dessert week.
I’ll keep you posted.
That’s how you do it.
Here’s negotiating with my head out loud: would I do a bulletproof coffee for dessert? No, my first attempt would be to do nooooo dessert. If I fail (if) then I’ll do it with a bit of stevia.
(You guys must be thinking that I’m mad. But thanks for listening)
It’s always an N=1 experiment. Gotta figure it out for your body. Best of luck.
I’m EXTREMELY SENSITIVE to sweets - the little bit of sweets I made at Christmas were gone WAY too soon. So I take it extra easy and try little bits here and there to see what I can tolerate. For my food porn the other night, I made a single-serve avocado chocolate pudding with a bit of stevia in it. I took about 20 minutes to eat it; really got the “chocolate value” out of it, and no chocolate or sweet cravings afterwards.
I’m thankful to find a non-triggering dessert, but have no illusions that there will be many of them. Most of my food porn, as @LeCheffre said, is keto basics. And I’m happy that way, because my addiction is under control.
