Food Poisoning Aftermath - what to eat afterwords

So I went to breakfast with a friend yesterday and had eggs and chorizo sausage. Within the hour, and fortunately after I got home, I had diarrhea. I ended up having numerous bouts of runs to the bathroom, and felt sick as a dog. Pretty sure it was the chorizo, because it was what I could taste every time I burped. Fortunately I had some Lomotil and took a dose after each subsequent bout. Spent the afternoon in bed and the evening trying to rehydrate with salt and water. Felt like eating a little something around 9 pm so had a Tbsp of peanut butter, then had a 2nd one as it tasted so good.

Woke up this am feeling very lightheaded, somewhat disoriented, and very thirsty, but that went away after I started hydrating. Had a cup of beef broth (full salt) and I tolerated that nicely. Am now drinking some iced coffee with HWC as I usually do in the morning and that seems to be OK.

Pre-keto, I would have some apple juice and saltine crackers, with maybe some oatmeal later in the day. What would be good substitutes for those items?

Not as tasty or satisfying, but I just drink water when I have days like your having. Hang in there!

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #3

How about a couple of slices of apple and a small amount of oatmeal boiled in milk or HWC? Or skip the oatmeal and just have the HWC? If you keep the total under 20 g, it shouldn’t spike your insulin.

But I’m not sure you need substitutes. The last time I had food poisoning on keto, once my stomach settled, I was able to get back to my normal diet without trouble.

I went through something like this a month ago and had the same issue - there’s nothing soothing and absorbent like a saltine in a keto diet. I tried a keto roll (almond flour and psyllium husk) and my stomach just said NO thank you.

My eventual solution was the same as Paul’s. I just kinda waited it out til I didn’t feel nauseous at all, then sipped some broth and chalked it up as a day of fasting.

Make sure that you are getting electrolytes, considering that you got dehydrated when ill and then you are drinking a lot of fluids now.

The bone broth is a good idea. Are you hungry? Is it more of needing something to settle your stomach? Try eggs, those are easier on digestion and have a healthy balance of fat and protein. What sounds good? Do you still feel queasy? If not could you just eat normally?

Thanks @brownth3, @PaulL, @kib, & @pamplemousse – I ended up having 1/2 cup of cold brew coffee with HWC a couple hours after the broth. I realized I was hungry about an hour ago, and got a taco bowl (no chips or rice) at my local health food store. That tasted good and went down well. I’m continuing to hydrate as much as possible and will have another small meal later.
