Flour substitutes might not be my enemy

I have always steered away from almond flour, coconut floor, etc due to what I read in Wheat Belly book about substitutes being nearly just as bad. I think I have misconception of what he meant by avoid marked “glutten free” foods. I think I also did it, because I was scarred that I would be tempted to eat regular wheat products if I started eating things that tasted close, but not wheat? For instance, we eat a deconstructed pizza with no crust at all it’s a casserole version. However, fathead pizza might be something I could even get the kids to try.

It appears I might actually have been missing out on some num, num items like fathead pizza and coconut flour waffles? Is there anything damning about eating almond flour or coconut flour that any know? Has it caused anyone weakness with regular wheat products in will power? I keep seeing yummy looking recipes posted and think to myself, hey self if there is no bad effects, other than the carb addition to watch for, why not give some of those recipes a try.

I try to avoid daily keto treats, but I do find it useful to have a way to eat pizza and pancakes and such at times. I feel less tempted by the wheat versions because I know there’s a way for me to have anything I want if I go home and make it for myself.

My breakfast:

  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 cup hazelnut flour (or other nut based flour)
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
    Mix together for smooth batter.

Fold in 1/4 cup sliced blackberries

Make as a crepe/pancake and then add dob of butter

Coconut flour and almond flour have nothing in common with grain flours besides being ground up food items.

Almond flour is literally just almonds.
Coconut flour is literally just coconut.

Do you eat these items as part of your keto diet?

The only way you will know if these items trigger you is to cook with them and see.

Oh and BTW they don’t act or taste anything like wheat so I doubt there would be any issues.

Agree with @Vega. Makes it so much easier not to have regular versions if I know I can have keto versions. I do think they can be a little higher in carb so that will depend on you. My kids will eat Fathead pizza and they are used to regular really good wheat pizza
