Five and a half weeks in, looking back

Good sharing. Just curious - what are you going to do after another 30 days? Seems to me that if you return to your old eating habits, you will just return to the same body/temperament you just left behind…

It’s a good question. Right now I don’t know the answer but the point you make it a good one. I’m giving it a lot of thought. At the moment I’m reading the Perfect Health Diet which incorporates safe starches. I might give this a try.

Good luck! Don’t forget about plain ole Keto - it’s pretty amazing and completely sustainable.

Try Dr. Ken Berry he has gone carnivore love his vidoes

Perhaps with the exception of those few individuals have been fully carnivore for more than 2 or 3 years, most of the people I know eating carnivore still consider the possibility that they may reintroduce some select plant foods at some point in the future.
I’m at about 18 months, and I still tell people that I don’t envision eating this way forever. I’m trying to understand if there is a point where the benefits level off, and that becomes the baseline so that when i re-introduce some plant foods, I can tell if they are improving my situation or not.
As time goes on, the simplicity of carnivore and the fact that it seems to be very near to optimum nutrition for me, very effortlessly, makes me much less inclined to even consider re-introducing plant foods.
At some point, when it seems that you have found an answer that works, with little to no overhead, you stop trying to solve the puzzle and just enjoy life

I really like Ken Berry’s outlook on a lot of this stuff. I like the way he narrows down the ways of eating… Paleo, then a subset of that being keto, and then a subset of that being carnivore. He’s just fine with wherever you find that you are healthy. If you get to paleo and that really works for you, great. If you get to paleo and decide you want a little more, then narrow things down to keto. And if you get to keto, you might decide to take it a step farther and go carnivore. And you are free to try any or all and figure out what works for you. He suggests everyone head in that general direction (ditching most of the carbs and sugars, making healthy choices) but he’s very open to your finding the place that really works for you. (He probably said it a lot better but that’s the general idea.)

I like that. It seems about as reasonable as any. Plus, I am really pleased that he’s not trying to sell me anything!

Thanks for this post and all the helpful replies. I’m two weeks into trying carnivore, but have had 2 short trips where total carnivore wasn’t possible. I like the simplicity, plus I raised my own beef steer and know he was grass-fed and organic (His name was T-Bone. LoL!). Also eating some chicken.
Do you do any dairy, such as cream or cheese?

Do you mind if I ask how your teeth are doing on carnivore?

#29

What teeth ? ha ha , only kidding. 5 months in, teeth good as is every thing else.

(Brian) #30

I can’t help but be curious about the question. Was it a poke at humor, the idea of tearing through all that meat with the ol’ teeth? Or is there reason to think that teeth won’t hold up for some reason when eating carnivore? Nutritional deficiency? Or something else? Really curious.

Can’t speak for @cwstnsko but i noticed tooth improvements immediately on starting canivore. Am currently 10 months in.

My teeth now stay so clean that I sometimes forget to brush them. They are whiter, gums v healthy, and they feel stronger.

(David) #32

Yes. I have heavy (double) cream in my coffee. I don’t eat much cheese. I like it but have to go out of my way to get it so usually don’t bother. I eat grass fed lambs liver every week. I eat eggs (usually just the yolks) warmed over ground beef,so fairly raw.

(Chris W) #33

No problems with my teeth. Temperature sensitivities that I had in the past are gone. I still get a bit of tartar on the inside of my lower front teeth that flakes off at times. I’m not sure if it’s worse than it used to be, or if it just flakes off easier than it used to be, but I notice it more now.

I asked because of not being sure if all mineral requirements will be met with carnivore, mainly calcium and magnesium. Having read about the balance between phosphorus and calcium, and seeing that meat has adequate phosphorus but no calcium, I am wondering how it works out for teeth and bones.
I am eating some cheese at the moment, but I am not sure if it bothers me or not. So if I saw a pattern of carnivore causing tooth issues, I would eat cheese even if it bothered me.
I tried eating nuts again a day or two ago, and had a recurrence of some pain in my trapezius muscle, which going LCHF seemed to cure very quickly after starting it about 11 days ago. So I don’t think I would be able to use nuts.
That’s good that you aren’t seeing any problems. If it were to cause issues, you would have already noticed it.
Thanks, everybody, for the input. Good news.

I found a very interesting video about the carnivore diet that pointed out that when you don’t eat plants, your body can assimilate more of the vitamins and minerals in the food. This means you can consume smaller amounts of those nutrients because none of them are bound up and made inaccessible by the plants you used to eat; for the most part they are totally accessible to your body. I found it here: https://youtu.be/isIw2AN_-XU (This is not my video; it is publicly posted on YouTube)

I am taking a quick break from a run down the fabulous las Vegas Strip and thought I’d type an update. Last night I “rewarded myself” with a big bag of Lays chips and a grab bag of peanut butter M&m’s.

It was a decision I made consciously and it is what it is. What I thought I’d report on is the morning after.

What follows is pretty personal, so feel free to skip or read as you see fit. It involves the digestive tract right to the very end.

I am experiencing acid reflux for the first time in about a month.

I have been pretty regular in my bathroom habits, once a day, comfortable, no urgency. This morning, less than 10 hours since I binged on sugar I have visited the bathroom three times. Still pretty solid, but less comfortable by a long way.

In addition, I have felt inflammation at the, shall we say, point of exit, which was pretty common for me before going carnivore, and totally absent since going carnivore.

I am not sure how I feel at the moment, except to say that anyone who doubts the impact of food on digestive health is talking out of an inflamed orifice.

I need to have a good think today about my food future. I have felt such health over the last few weeks. Last night showed me how easy it is to reverse.

Anyway, good health to all and viva Las Vegas!

That’s what got me to kick my ice cream habit.

I could eat ALL this food, that tasted great, and have no ill effects. Or I could have a pint of ice cream, and be sick the rest of the night.

Some choices are made for you.

Wow, I am so happy to hear of someone else getting off of citalopram! I tried to get off last January, prior to keto, and even though I weaned off of it slowly, it was a horrible experience where I couldn’t stop crying it seemed. I have been on keto since July and you have given me the courage to take a shot at weaning myself off of Celexa, which is what I am taking now, especially since I’ve retired which eliminated the main source of my stress.

When you’re in Vegas, I am sure the buffets will have lots of clean protein (ham, chicken, prime rib!) you can focus on. Good luck, make a lot of money and come back lighter!

First off, that’s amazing! Great job!

Second: omg I’m going to Vegas tomorrow too! Eeek! I’m very scared. See, I’ve been doing the Keto diet for about 6 months now, BUT I can only manage to stick to it through the work week and EVERY WEEKEND fall off the wagon again. It’s become a nasty little habit and I’m determined to break it, but Vegas is a special kind of temptress and seems to get me every time. I then spend the first half of every week miserable and dealing with the consequences of what has become a viscous cycle. I am determined to make it through a Vegas weekend this time. If I can make it through Vegas, I can make it through any temptation an average weekend might throw at me.

I think you can do it, so I think I can do it too. Good luck to you! I hope to hear about your successes when you return.
