(thinking this is likely the best section for this)
I’ve been doing Keto since March 3rd and officially was down 80+ pounds a few days ago (though was one other time, but I was fasting). Yes, I’m one of those Keto “unicorns”. Sorry ladies…no, it’s not fair at all. Not in the slightest!!
My background is in technology, with a little over 8 years spent at BlackBerry. I got caught in the second round of layoffs there in late 2012 (that’s a longer, drawn out story, best told over a few drinks) and, other than a contract that I did up at Bruce Power (nuclear station) in 2014, the last several years have been an exercise in futility trying to find another technology leadership position here in Southern Ontario.
At our peak, there were over 21,000 of us working at BlackBerry. Today, I’d guesstimate that they likely have less than 4500 employees. It creates a pretty ridiculously competitive employment market when you have 10’s of thousands of people out of work in a very short period. Hundreds of my peers that grew up in the area and had much better networks of people available to them were all looking for work at the same time. (times like this is when it really makes you regret “taking the blue pill” and going into management). SO much easier being a hands-on technical guy landing a job in a heartbeat when you need to.
So, I’ve had enough. Enough of this region. Enough of being told time and again that I’m over-qualified for the interviews that I DO get. Time to “change my stars”, kick my fate into a different direction and a nice change of scenery while I’m at it!!
So I’m doing some extended travelling (though picked a lousy time of year for it - it’s monsoon season in south-east asia) - starting in India (landing on July 23rd) for two weeks, then on to Thailand for about a week, then in Vietnam, then Cambodia, finally landing in Australia on August 26th. The plan being to get in a little culture as well as applying to some jobs in Australia, New Zealand and maybe South Africa while I’m in the neighbourhood. (over the years, I’ve applied to a LOT of jobs all over the world - being single with no children of my own, I’m highly mobile). Hasn’t seemed to have helped, no matter how much I stressed it in my cover letters - the recruiters just can’t seem to wrap their head around that I’m actually willing to pay for my own relocation - I just need an employer to sponsor my work visa.
So, I’m selling everything (been at it for a few months) and I mean EVERYTHING - well, other than what can fit into a couple file-folder size boxes of memorabilia that will get stored at “Second Closet” for about $20 a month. Only possessions I’m keeping are what fit into my backpack. Sold my BMW convertible last year. Sold my SUV a little over a week ago. Living room is looking pretty sparse, though I do still have a bunch of stuff still to go. Looking like most of my clothing well be getting donated. On that note, I’ve set the cut-off for sales for July 15th - one week before I fly out. At that point, all of the Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace, VarageSale and LetGo ads will get pulled and everything will either be gifted to friends/family or donated to charity.
Heh. One of the dressers that I sold to a girl - turned out she and her father that came to help pick it up are from South Africa. He said “Oh, you have to apply for a job in New Zealand!!! They’re DYING for IT people right now!” Music to my ears!! Considering all of my Aussie friends here in Canada are saying that they want to retire in New Zealand one day, it certainly sounds like the place to be! Also, it looks like their immigration policies may be a little more friendly than Australia’s at the moment. (read through the “restricted jobs” list on the Aus immigration site…didn’t look very hospitable). Aus or NZ would be more preferable than South Africa (the latter of which is supposed to have the best earnings vs cost of living ratio on the planet due to how wealthy and low-tax the country is due to their gold and diamond mines) - as the Aussies and Kiwi’s are a LOT more like us Canadians that just about any other groups of people on the planet. More so than we are to the Americans and I think we’re more alike than the Aussies are to the British as well. Ah…we can debate that over some pints…or even better, some good whiskey.
It was suggested by one of the friends that I’ve made on here that I should create a blog to record my travels. I decided, why not? So I kicked it off and started posting about once a week (as life really isn’t all that exciting at the moment, but I need to learn my way around doing this before I actually land over there).
I think it’s ok to post the link here (I’ve asked permission - but Richard & Carl are even more crazy busy than usual as Ketofest is imminent - so hopefully they won’t have to nix the link)
I will NOT be doing anything like this site…just a blog from a guy that’s going to try to be as close to Keto as possible, while doing a bunch of travelling!!! And, yes, there will be lots of pictures of food. (will post some over here too - but don’t want to monopolize the “What did you Keto today?” thread too much.
So the blog:

I do try to point people over here every so often, so maybe that’ll make it ok.
Anywho. That’s enough rambling for the moment. Glad for any feedback / suggestions the community can throw my way!!
Cheers!
