First week of Keto

I lost 2.7 kilos on my first week. Should I be concerned?

It’s almost surely mostly water, it’s quite fine.

When you go into ketosis, your body’s carbohydrate stores (glycogen) start dwindling. Water is bound up to the glycogen, so as the glycogen goes away, the water is released.

Welcome to the forums!

I’m not sure what you mean by the question. What is your reason for eating a ketogenic diet? Is it to lose fat, or to restore metabolic health?

In any case, losing weight is usually a good thing, especially if it’s the loss of fat. (Losing muscle mass or bone density is not good, however.) As mentioned, much of the initial loss is water, but continued loss is generally fat. If you are embarking on this way of eating in order to shed excess stored fat, then we should probably let you know that the path of fat loss is never smooth. You will notice daily fluctuations, though the overall trend will probably be downward. A complicating factor is that some people add muscle mass and increase their bone density from eating ketogenically; this confuses the scale by making it appear that we are not losing fat. In such a case it is important to use the fit of our clothing as an additional measure of progress. It should also be noted that the stories of large immediate loss of fat are stories from people who had great quantities to lose; everyone’s fat loss begins to slow as we approach a healthier weight. (In other words, if you want to lose 50 kg of fat, it will happen faster than losing 5 kg.)

Lastly, women eating ketogenically often find that their hormones also can make fat loss more complicated. A number of women on these forums have reported that it took over a month for their fat loss even to begin; apparently some women need time for their hormones to reregulate themselves, before some of the benefits of a ketogenic diet start to show. Women may also find that, from eating ketogenically and getting enough food for the first time in years, their monthly cycle can take months to settle down. All of these responses are normal and should not be cause for concern.

Nope! Mostly going to be water but in the right direction and shows you’re doing it right! Keep an eye on your salt intake and make sure you’re getting enough. That’s the beginning of how your electrolyte go outta whack and you start to get keto flu symptoms.
