Today I had my first physical since starting Keto. I’m still awaiting my lab results and can’t wait to get them. However, I asked my doctor his opinion of Keto. He recommended I only do it for a few months and said new data indicates people on Keto are at a higher risk for dementia. Anyone else ever heard this or have any input?
First Physical since starting Keto
Ask him to give you the reference to the study so you can read it yourself.
Before your dementia sets in…
Actually, since Alzheimer’s disease is now being linked to insulin resistance, some researchers have taken to calling it type III diabetes. I have heard that a ketogenic diet helps clean up amylloid plaque and neurofibrillary tangles. The indications are that even if it can’t heal the disease completely it can certainly help a lot. So I’d say your risk of dementia is actually lower on a ketogenic diet.
I too would ask your Doctor where we might find that data - I would genuinely love to see it.
Here we are all getting sicker and sicker on the standard diet yet Keto is vilified as bad. It is hard to get people to move away from 60 plus years of indoctrination of low fat high fiber crap. I started this diet in december of 2017 and have felt 20 years younger yet people want to try to convince me you have to have whole grains and fruit. I laugh at the idea that continuing on the path that made me feel like crap should be returned to. Find doctors that support what you want to accomplish.
OMG! Paul’s already got keto dementia . Hearing voices… take him to the ER and hook him up to some IV carbs - STAT!!
Rather than ask him about his science, just provide him with the opposite side. Amy Berger is a great place to start, she has done podcasts with lots of folks about low carb helping with brain health. Here’s a good starting point but do listen to her podcasts about the topic too.
