First Fast Completed!

Hello Ketonians!

I’m new to the forum and have been Keto since 12/26/17. I’m learning SO much and making great progress, down 31 lbs so far (started at 264). Today I completed my very first 24 hour fast. I felt like crap though!! I did not get hunger cravings but felt very “off” and dizzy. I made sure to add pink salt to water throughout day but nothing helped. Broke fast this evening and started feeling much better. Blood glucose tested high (101) and ketones low (0.6) which is worse than a normal day of Keto eating for me. Would love to hear your thoughts on my reaction to fasting.

Just a couple of questions. How long have you been eating ketogenically? How was your day today, extra stressful? Did you sleep well last night?

Eating Keto since December 26, 2017. I slept about 6-7 hours the night before and had a stressful day for sure. Was feeling terrible for entire day yesterday and fell asleep early last night in hopes of a recovery. Woke with a headache today but will eat normal Keto and keep up electrolytes.

So, you’re probably fat adapted. You got good sleep (unless you usually sleep more hours). But the stress… I am just starting my fourth day of fasting. This is my second extended fast. Yesterday was a very stressful day for me and I was hungrier last night than I’ve been before during a fast. Started feeling a little bit of a headache beginning.

So, my understanding is that stress can spike your insulin, which can drive hunger. This might have happened with you (and with me too).

Sounds like you’ve got a great plan! If you feel like it, maybe you can try another fast on a better day.

I wish you well.

Keep calm and keto on!

I think you’re right Diane! I was pretty bummed that it was so tough for me on my first try. Especially since I didn’t have hunger cravings and all the discomfort was centered on a headache and general feeling of being unwell. I just listened to 2KetoDudes podcast about stress and your assessment is spot on! I am going to make a direct effort to manage stress in the upcoming week and then try again next Wednesday. Thank you for your input! I love this forum and will start spending more time here!

Electrolytes and eventually strive for four days. Four days is long enough for the body to reach the peak of autophagy, anything beyond for days of fasting is super easy.

That is my goal! I will keep trying until I get four days. I am at the very beginning and that seems like a big stretch goal but I am positive I can do it like so many of you guys. I will definitely post on the forums the day I achieve it!! :tada::confetti_ball:
