First Day back training - a few small issues

(John Cahill) #1

Hi. First time post here, thought I’d put out a few comments. I’ve done a few searches regarding working out again after being Keto (I’ve been low carb for 6 years). Skip down to the last paragraph if you want to go to the heart of the matter

I didn’t see any place for ‘Hi I’m John - my story is’, so I’ll skip the details only to say this. I started training in Krav Maga, Israel hand to hand combat in January 2017. This was due to my lack of drive in a normal gym. You see I have discipline when it comes to eating, but in the gym I don’t push myself.

Today was the first time back training after going Keto, I could tell I could not go sooner. I never had the ‘flu’ but I did have some headaches and lightheadedness. Just took time to get the proper amount of sodium is what I figured out.

Tonight, a lot of throwing down and getting back up, repeated for about 45 minutes. Well towards the last 15 minutes of class I was getting lightheaded. I can’t tell if it could be due to my blood pressure meds, something I have suffered from before. However not to this extent. Is it possible after on 6 weeks I may not need my blood pressure pills? I mean I am on the lowest dose, have been for years. Or should I load up on sodium and or fat in the future? I did drop some salt in my water and grabbed it when I could between techniques.

My recommendation is check your BP again now, and check with your dr whether you need the meds. If you can, get off them. Why? Most meds will raise insulin, which is what you’re trying to avoid.

If you are light headed it is possible/likely you are driving your BP too low with the meds. Keto can regulate BP. Don’t know for sure in your case.

That is my feeling. I actually did take my BP. 104/60. pulse 66

Time to start monitoring twice a day again.

Thanks

That BP is ok, similar to mine. But I DO occasionally get light headed at that level. If your meds are BP lowering, I would suggest you don’t need them.
