Firm stools

(Peter Hoatson) #1

Hi team,

I’ve been eating beef, butter and eggs for the past few months with the occasional exception when going to a friend’s house. I don’t remember when I last did a firm stool however,. It’s more like sludge.

I eat a lot of fat and often wonder if I’d ever go if I didn’t! I go once a week now, never painful just not satisfying. I’m quite sedentary after a knee injury and expect that may play a role. I keep my water intake to slightly off clear urine and am scratching my head!

I love the satiety, no more cravings and also the mental clarity. No aches, pain or Inflammation. No meds and no supplements.

Do you have any experience in this? Any recommendations?

Thanks for all your help!

If you’re forcing fat just for the sake of it, which many do, that’s probably why. Fat can act as a stool softener in high amounts.

Hopefully the others who had this will chime in! I never had this. Carnivore gives me ghost wipe, it’s awesome  And I go only once a day, that’s much more rare than on carbs…
Fat doesn’t seem to make a difference but I try to eat as lean as I can so my average isn’t excessive. I learned to stay below 200g on most days even on low-carb (it took some effort but wasn’t super hard), now I am lower. How much fat do you eat? Even if you need the energy, we may need to start with a different fat percentage, I had to eat leaner first… A few months is a long time to me (I ate leaner for a few days only) but not everyone adapts so well I suppose. I always ate high-fat, maybe that’s why it doesn’t cause any kind of problem for me (except overeating but it’s not an issue on/near carnivore as long as I choose my items well). How fatty was your old diet? When I actually needed a big change, it always took a longer time (it was more mental than physical though).

Even if there are people who eat fat in huge amounts and feel fine and even lose fat rapidly, it’s not the way for all of us. But I have no idea how much “a lot” for you and what it is compared to your actual needs…

@Peter_Hoatson Welcome to the forum!

Your description of your experience is a bit surprising. Many folks (myself included) have experienced the opposite of what you’ve described when starting up on serious carb-restriction - and then seek ways to “loosen things up” (e.g., magnesium citrate, other salt adjustments).

It’s possible you might be overdoing the fat, perhaps, but the fact that this has been going on for months and by now your mitochondria are likely fat-adapted (and more fully utilizing what you’re eating), and that you’re eating only to satiety would suggest to me that you’re not likely overdoing fat consumption to meet your body’s energy needs.

Plus the fact that your energy level, mental clarity and lack of pain/inflammation or discomfort are where you’ve described also suggest that “all is well” … all but(t) your dissatisfaction with your bowel movements.

If anything else were amiss, I’d encourage you to start messing around with potential solutions. But I’m more inclined, given your situation, to encourage you to stay the course and give things more time to settle down.

Between gut biome, dietary fiber, salt intake - all of which affect us on a very individual basis, and some not at all - I’d read up on such possibilities as a learning exercise, but refrain from actually pulling the trigger on any of them at this early stage.

So that’s some totally free (and overpriced) internet advice from a stranger. :vulcan_salute:

Many thanks for your input. Yes, very expensive advice!

I don’t eat any fiibre as I only eat beef, butter and eggs. I know some carnivore doctors who don’t eat fibre and have cracked this so now it’s my turn. Fat reduction doesn’t Seem like the way to go.

I’ll work it out

I have “Sludge” (and less often) when I am strict carnivore. And
It doesn’t bother me. I had struggled with constipation for years. So loose is fine in my book.
