I’ve been doing Keto since November. I’ve loved it. Lost 20 pounds and have felt incredible. Stalled with weight loss and started checking blood ketones and noticed I was struggling to stay on ketosis. I started supplementing with exogenous ketones but just briefly. I got some good advice on here and cut them out and went back to focus on what I was eating. In the last week I have consistently had at least a .5 reading of blood ketones which is great for me. I’m feeling good.
But I got on scale this morning thinking maybe I would see a budge. And I did—but the wrong direction! I gained 6 pounds!! I know this has to be water or something, right? Clothes feel better, not worse. That should matter more, right! Reassurance welcome!
Finally in Ketosis, weight gain!
Hi Marcy
Your body composition may be turning into a good direction??
More muscle gain but losing body fat.
Bcoz scale sometimes can’t tell what’s going on inside your body.
KCKO!!
6lbs isn’t much and could be no more than a bad week or some water retention. Exogenous ketones are great for energy but forcing the ketones high doesn’t help the weight loss unless that energy allows you to kill it at the gym more. After 6mo’s I’d just comb back over your diet and make sure your not slipping with what your eating.
6lb in a day is almost surely a change in the amount of water in your body. When you think about it 6lbs is a lot to all of a sudden turn into body fat.
We can use up to 31.5 kCal/lb/day of body fat energy.
Let’s work out how much 31.5 kCal of stored energy is in additional body fat weight. We know that a pound of fat is roughly 3500 kCal of stored energy. So we’re talking about roughly 1% of your body fat that you can use every day, at maximum.
I don’t know how fast you can put energy INTO body fat, but I suspect it’s probably in the same range.
So let’s say (for the sake of round numbers) you are 100lbs with 20% body fat, you have 20lbs of body fat, the most you can draw from that is about 630 kCal/day. In weight that would be roughly 1/6th of a lb a day you can lose from that 20 lbs. Someone with 40lbs of body fat 1/3rd of a lb a day. 100lbs of body fat = 3150 kCal = 0.9 lb per day.
If the rate we can add new energy into body fat is similar (and no-one really knows) then a person with 20lbs of body fat might expect to be able to put on 1/6th of a lb a day.
Hope that helps you feel better about the weight change
Thanks! I discontinued use of exogenous ketones and have focused just on food and finally am in natural ketosis.
By any chance is it pms week for you ??? This happens to me every month and the day after my period it drops by same amount just like that . During pms week and period week my body firstly puts on those horrid pounds stays that way for that week and then just drops right off .
That is possible! This is probably TMI, but I had an endometrial ablation a few years ago (which means I still have my cycle but I don’t have any bleeding). It makes it impossible to track but this would certainly make sense!
Thanks!
