I’ve been LCHF for 8 months but started Keto in June with IDM. I have never had “good” ketone readings on my blood meter. Usually 0.2-0.8mM, twice I soared up to 1.2mM. I’ve struggled with fasting as a result my longest was 25hours.
9 days ago I was told to Fat Fast which I call Fat Feast for as long as I could. Managed 4 days then tried fasting, again my numbers were below 1.0. Yesterday I hit pay dirt! Ketones 2.1mM and I have fasted now for 40 hours. No hunger pangs at all.
Not sure how long I will go so I’m just going to ride this wave. Another neat side effect, I had a mini whoosh of 1.8 lbs. For me that’s a huge loss.
It can happen! Wheeeeee!
Finally found Ketosis
Ketones do not equate to your body being more fat adapted or that you are burning more fat. If you were LCHF for some time before you body may be efficiently using ketones so they will not show up high in the blood. You going to want to measure your body fat % and use other measurements besides for the scale. Your fat fast may be helping you loose weight but your going to want to make sure it is not your muscle mass.
At this point I don’t consider myself remotely close to being fat adapted. I get what you are saying but I’ve been working with Nadia at IDM, Dr Fungs clinic, and she believes I was struggling with fasting and weight loss because I was not in nutritional ketosis which is a reading of 1.5 mM/L or more. Mine were sub par. We’ve been working on diet choices, fat fasting and liquid fasting.
I don’t have easy access to testing for body fat analysis. I do weigh daily and use my weekly average weight along with measurements monthly to measure my progress. I’m now testing daily as per Nadia my ketones.
My first 6 months were LCHF, I lost 15 lbs but then regained 8 of them. I was stalled at that weight for 3 months. That was when I read Keto Clarity and The Obesity Code. I started watching Dr Fungs You Tube videos and followed his blog on IDM. Podcasts also became a daily routine. I joined IDM in June. Started IF and saw some initial success. Then 2 weeks of family birthdays and a wedding happened. I strayed at 2 meals and that was enough to cause me three weeks of frustration. Last week fixed it and I’m happy.
Also Dr Fung clearly states that we don’t burn muscle until all fat is burned, yes, POWs and the poor souls incarcerated in camps were starving and loss muscle but they were starved. Simple fasting, fat fasting and eating a ketogenic diet will not burn muscle. I have a fair amount of fat to burn before I need to worry about my muscle. Strength training helps as well!
I think you have to have your minimum g/kg of protein baseline for that to hold.
Interesting. My blood ketones are rarely above .5 mmol/l unless I have been fasting for more than 36 hours. I have no problems fasting 80-90 hours.
Update!
So the fat fasting that Nadia prescribed worked. I just broke a 75 hour fast last evening. My ketones yesterday were 2.9mM/L and urine stick read moderate. The best part, I felt like I could keep fasting and the only reason I broke was I wanted to enjoy a dinner with my husband, not because I was hungry or feeling unwell.
So my plan with Nadia for the next two weeks is to stay in ketosis and build my fasting muscles! I’m going to continue tracking all my food, daily ketone measurements and fasting. It’s working and I feel really good.
Oh and I lost 2.1lbs net after my refeed yesterday!
