I hear this on the radio all the time in Oklahoma, along with eat whole grain bread, for a healthy diet. Who di you think sponsors these adds?
Fill half your plate with Fruits and Vegetables
Keto-friendly foods are typically more nutrient dense than carbs. For example, a few tables comparing nutrients of various foods, by Dr. Zoe Harcombe:
It’s not a one size fits all thing. We eat tons of vegetables typically and I eat not shortage of the better fruits. I eat 50/100g of blueberries a couple times a day in my “protein sludge” and love it. We also eat carbs in veggies like cauliflower and there’s no shortage of others that are higher but still ok for us. A blueberry isn’t a banana, and carbs from cauliflower isn’t the same as bread. Can’t treat them all the same because they’re not.
There’s plenty of stuff WAY worse than eating a sandwich on whole grain bread. Not normal for us, but the reality is that’s the least of most people’s issues when it comes to the amount of carbs they’re eating and where they’re coming from. I’ve got a 6yo that eats sandwiches every day on that stuff. I’m probably gonna put him on the low carb bread that I eat when I do since it’s almost not detectable as not being “real” bread but gotta remember we’re the extremists in most cases.
Nutrient density isn’t always important when we eat something. It’s more important if we eat little but on a high-calorie diet one can afford lots of not nutritious stuff too, just for energy. I focus on nutrition dense food as I have to, I do my best to avoid added fat too, well my bigger reason is it not satiating me…
To me, banana, raisins and blueberry feels the same if the sugar content is the same. For some reason, apples are way worse than bananas but it’s harder to get satiated with a little, it depends on the apple, though. And bread can’t be much worse than cauliflower, they are both quite bad in my world unless I can keep the carbs low but it has no sense to eat them then I actually agree with the above comment pretty much, it’s just very individual so it’s not true for everyone. We often choose lower-carb food because it’s harder to overeat carbs that way, I imagine. But sometimes we prefer tiny amounts of carby food and big amounts of lower-carb food so it’s not always as simple. Frozen banana was always okay for me on keto while I had to ban fried cauliflower. But if I forget about fruits and vegetables, that’s the best.
Everyone in my family consider keto bread and wheat bread glaringly different, even the texture isn’t the same but pretty similar to me, I am fine with it but the taste is a tad problematic. Not very much as I eat keto bread with tasty stuff, preferably with a very strong flavor to mask the gluten. And I can always tweak the recipe to make it better, to suit me at that moment, I change.
Carbs can’t hide themselves, usually, I barely met any food where I couldn’t very easily tell if it has much or very little carbs. But I am sure it’s individual too. And being very different isn’t necessarily bad
