It’s incredibly infuriating, but I would just put it to the back of your mind. The faceless front of HR is not going to care about your record prior to this - it’s literally the ‘beep boop, rule broken’ of a machine.

What does matter is that the people close to you - your colleagues, your manager etc - have supported you strongly throughout. They will have done so partly because you do have such a good reputation through your work ethic.

It is absolutely, completely, totally and utterly unfair. I have been there myself. But it’s also not worth giving it any brain space.

If there are no consequences, try to forget it and move on. Keep it in your mind for when people try to convince you not to retire - or even if they try to convince you to take on more tasks than you’re ready for. If you take on more and fail, they’ll send another letter - so don’t be afraid of using Occupational Health to slow down your return to work if needs be, or of exploring early retirement as you’d mentioned previously.

Crap though, mate. I really feel for you.

Decided I was still hungry after the small bite or two of chicken so cooked steak and bacon. Just felt like something salty. Put the bacon over the steak and it completed hid it so took another pic to show there was a small sirloin underneath it. Then had a second batch of bacon. Now enjoying a couple of mugs of the chicken soup. Just stuck the chicken in the smoothie bullet and stirred it in to the stock and it was very tasty.

Also to @Septimius point… I do think my letter of reprimand helped my brain accept the idea of retirement. Sooner rather than later. :smirk::vulcan_salute:t2:

I think it’s quite damning what @Karen18 shared earlier, about people using their ‘entitlement’ of sick leave (which isn’t a thing in the UK as it is in America) - compared to what plays out with those who play by the rules.

All these companies do is teach you to take the time off because you’re thought no more of for playing by the rules. You’ve played fair with them all this time, and then it isn’t repaid at the moment you genuinely needed it - and that’s hard to accept.

Seems to me that they spend all of this time cracking down to stop people from abusing the system, but those people just find a new way to work the system, and they end up penalising those who have never put a foot wrong.

It’s genuinely a rotten system.

@Septimius @Karen18
Pet peeve alert: YES! I’ve worked for folks who put very specific rules in place for everyone, while those rules were actually aimed at the few people who needed them but ignored them. The result was those of us who put our heart and soul into our performance felt belittled and unappreciated.

A manager of people should have the courage to speak to individuals about their individual issues and not take the coward’s way out with a group scolding. OK. All done. See, Karen? We all feel your pain!

(Karen) #246

You are all such a comfort and I feel exact same way about it all. You know I never ever believed I would be treated any differently but it still stings.

@robintemplin … a manager of people should have the courage… yep and i have confronted one or two over the years for sending out a group telling off instead of confronting the offending staff

Good thing is I have had some lovely messages of ‘horror’ that I should have been given the letter. I didn’t realise until having the stroke how well people thought of me. I always thought people probably hated working with me because I like things done properly and don’t suffer fools or non team players hahahaha

Well I think I have been that tired today that it has roused my hunger and picking instincts. Just had 2 hard boiled eggs with an incy wincy bit of mayo and a small slither of stilton prior to them. Its the only cheese I have in the house and I am not so keen on it these days so it’s taking me an age to eat. Perhaps I should only get stilton so it gets me off cheese altogether

Started today with bacon and scrambled eggs later will be beef chuck I put in oven last night.
I got the chuck roast out after 20 hours then pan fried it in butter came out perfect med rare and tender… I def am enjoying the food out of the oven…

(Karen) #248

I must admit I use my oven and hob the majority of times. Got a bit fed up with stuff in the slow cooker as it just didn’t really have the same taste. Not that I won’t use the slow cooker again… its perfect for overnight cooking if ever I want to cook a beef joint but I prefer steaks. And of course pork roast has to be done slow in the oven to get that beautiful tender pulled port effect and crispy crackling. Oooh I am feeling like it must be nearing brunch time and you talking about your scrambled eggs this morning has made me want some lol… and the bacon hahaha. I have another small sirloin in fridge to eat later.

A much better sleep last night… any sleep would have been better than the night before lol but I did feel it was a good one and only had about 3 wee trips in the night. YAY! as soon as I got up I did the stair runs to get then out the way and dine a bit of pottering this morning. The palm is still upright so the tights did the trick … oh and the hold-up stocking that I also had to tie round it as the tights were not quite tight enough on their own to keep it standing. Gusty again today but not as bad as the last couple of days… well not yet anyway, who know what it will be like later!?

Drs have become very frustrating people to deal with these days. I don’t know if it is because they seem to become less empathetic when you get older, or if they are just less knowledgeable.

They also seem to try and blame you for everything rather than diagnosing a problem. “Do you drink, do you smoke, how much exercise do you do?” Never anything like, “What is you diet. How are your stress levels.”

They just to like prescribing the first thing that comes to mind, and show you the door!

We tend to find an old Dr as they appear more knowledgeable (sometimes). But here in South Africa we find that our pharmacist is more knowledgeable and on the ball.

This is such a unique experience to this woe, never had it before. Also it signals the end of my fat tolerance for the meal. Just incredible how the flavor suddenly changes almost mid bite and hubby will say, are you finished? And sadly I answer yes, I’m done.

@Karen18 what a rip, getting a reprimand for being ill. It is government service after all and you have such an exemplary record. You’ll love “retirement” but I bet you don’t just put your feet up and call it a day. We finished military service over 20 years ago and I work more now then then. (6-7 days a week.)It just seems to get more and better and the biggest difference is that now there are no reprimands and everywhere I work I’m loved and appreciated and people actually listen to me. Do retire. There’s another, better layer under this onion skin and it’s far, far more satisfying.

This weekend I’ve been reading here but had troubling finding time to post. Valentine’s Day shows Friday and Saturday and yesterday’s church and pickers circle. I love that I’m not so hungry in an evening’s work as to have to eat their food but I did order a heated lunch box with lava rocks especially for Sundays so I can grab a bite between church and the roadhouse. Friday we were away from about 4-10, menu was hamburgers at this roadhouse so I got double cheeseburger patties. Choked down about half of them, they were gross. Then Saturday we were resting after teaching and lunch and had a call for a show 45 minutes away from 9-12 pm! Naturally we both accepted eagerly, masochists that we are
Saturday I made cheesy meat and bacon things in the air fryer out of Maria Emmerich’s Carnivore cookbook. By the time the bacon is crispy the hamburger layer is so overcooked. There are 2 of them left now. Dry. Improved with a little baconnaise.
Friday was the weird pork I thought was beef and sous vided 2 days at 135.doesn’t taste like pork, I think the rest goes out this morning!
Yesterday afternoon I took out the chuck roast and shank steak that was in the sous vide since Friday. I had used some of the smoked salt on it. The jury is still out on that stuff, also an Emmerich suggestion. The chuck was very nice! Lastnight I seared a piece of the shank and it was pretty good, but not pink. Maybe a lower temp for that, but still the 2 days, next time.

Happy Valentines!!

(Robin) #252

Funny that tights weren’t tight enough. :smirk:

(Karen) #253

@JJFiddle Thank you for the encouragement. When I retire fully I don’t think I could ever be completely inactive. I like to be doing things but don’t want to feel committed to any one thing. What service were you in? I was in the Army for 7 years back in the day … before marriage Nd children came on the scene. Then I had to get discharged when I fell pregnant with my son as it was before one could remain in service with children.

@robintemplin yes my daughter thought it was funny too.

Well I had scrambled eggs for brunch and I was blessed with 2 double yolks. Then had a side plate of bacon. Nearly run out of butter and thought about braving the cold and wet to go to Lidl but knew I would want to buy cheese, which in turn made me think about it and want some so I had a slither of stilton as I knew that would suffice and although not half as nice as cheddar, would take the thought away, which it did and I didn’t go to the shop. Had a bit of ham defrosted from freezer as well.

Dinner was a small sirloin steak and 2 fried eggs and again I was blessed with one more double yolk! I really enjoyed that meal. Now finishing it off with a small cup of boiled water.

(Alec) #254

I think it is because you are getting wiser, and probably less trusting. Certainly true for me. I used to believe what my doctor told me. Not any more.

(Daisy) #255

It’s been a super busy last couple days. Sleep has been ok. Food has been good. Just have a lot going on that has my feeling kinda low. But here’s today’s food:

(Edith) #259

I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this. We are going through something similar with my parents and my in-laws. When we talk to others our age, it seems almost everyone is going through something similar. It’s sad.

I hope you are taking some time to take care of yourself. :hugs:

I have a funny, embarrassing story to share.

I was off from work last week. Yesterday was my first day back and by the end of the day my brain was tired, so I was a little scatterbrained by the time I got home. For dinner, I made pork roast in my instant pot, and I had it sitting on my stove, so I could vent the smoke when I was browning the meat.

After the roast was done cooking, I needed to thicken the gravy and I was busy chit-chatting with my husband and not paying attention. Instead of putting the instant pot on saute, I turned on the burner instead. Smoke started pouring from my instant pot. I caught the darn thing on fire! Melted the bottom! Argh!!:joy:

I actually liked that instant pot. It didn’t deserve to die such a fiery death.
