Fell off the horse just a little bit this weekend, and the scale shows it

I knew it would eventually happen, my first little slip up since starting Keto.

On Saturday I took my wife out to a great all you can eat Korean BBQ place, I thought to myself “oh well, this can’t really hurt right? I mean, it’s all meat, lets dig in!” Unfortunately I also feasted on all the marinated cuts and little side dishes, all of which I’m sure had quite a bit of sugar in them.

Later that evening, we headed to my friend’s place to catch the fight, and though I stayed away from beer, I had quite a few mixed drinks, all mixed with some kind of soda (I’m not really a drinker anymore, partied too hard in my late teens/early 20’s and hate the taste of alcohol now, but wanted to be social and avoid the shit-talking my friends I hadn’t seen in a while would surely start up), also snacked a bit while there, got home around 3:00 am and knocked out.

Come Sunday, the wife and I woke up late and a little hungover. I turn on Netflix to watch one of my beloved food documentaries, and BOOM, instant craving for cheap Indian food hits. I get in my car, drive a few blocks down to Curry Hut, get the 3 item combo (which comes with freshly made garlic naan bread and rice), head home, and devour the mountain of food I had in front of me.

I step on the scale this morning, and I had gone from 243 on Saturday, to 252 today! :frowning: :frowning: Plus, my wedding ring which was almost too big for my finger, is back to being a little tight, I guess it’s water retention or something.

It sucks, I have goals I’m trying to reach by certain time frames and this messed it up a little, but I’m back on it today. Before going to bed last night I finished up my OMAD meal prep for the week, so I’m looking forward to my butter covered steaks, bacon wrapped asparagus, and avocados all this week.

I decided to have four IPA’s at a charity event “pints for pups” and saw a slight gain happen. I also got lucky that they had some dry rub chicken wings that tasted great.

I think what did you in was the mentality “since I went off plan anyway I might as well go big”. Even though I had some beer both days (my weakness) I stayed on plan for the rest of the weekend. My slight gain is already almost gone. If you replaced that carb influx the next morning with some exercise to burn it up you would that much further ahead now. I wasn’t hungover but if I was I would have probably been diving into the bloody mary bar sunday morning so I can totally get this.

Yup you’re totally right, if I hadn’t caved in to my cravings yesterday, I’m sure I’d be better off. I also haven’t had a BM since Saturday morning, so hopefully i stabilize in weight a little bit after that, and after flushing out whatever water I’m retaining.

Yeah, that’s the other thing that I have to factor in to my gains and losses now that I am on a every other day schedule.

Don’t beat yourself up George. It’s not like you gorged on cake and cookies and packed on ten pounds of fat. One bad weekend of iffy carbs is nothing to dwell on. You will suvive this.

Thanks Carl!

One day or one weekend won’t derail you. Failing to limit it to just that one weekend will. Get back to your plan and use the experience to learn what happens when you stumble, and what you need to do to course-correct.

(Scott) #8

I’ll beat you up over it George, you need some tough love!

(George) #9

haha I’ll need it if I slip up again! I’ll be so happy if I lose all that was gained this weekend plus my usual 2.2 lbs on top of that by next weigh-in. As long as I keep hitting a minimum of 2 lbs/week then I should be able to hit my September and December goals I set for myself.

I would focus on the lessons you just “paid” for.

Per @Rclause is there a tendency to go big once off plan? Is it a rebellion against the restrained diet or a desire to keep the “fun” going?

Should you have committed yourself to a Sunday full-day fast after a Saturday night splurge to keep yourself somewhat on track?

Should you have forced yourself to choose between dinner out or the fights with friends and drinking? (I think this one is big because it would make you think through the consequences - drinking and a hangover tend to make more eating the next day inevitable. A next-day fasting commitment - or just the desire to keep it to one evening - really just about always implies avoiding alcohol).

Know thyself!

Your Saturday night was fine. Though there are plenty of 반찬(side dishes) at Korean restaurants that are perfectly fine for keto, by the way.

Right here is where you failed, starting where I boldfaced it.

You had LOTS of opportunities for your adult mind to wake up and change course. This isn’t a “oh, it was right there in front me, peer pressure” kind of thing. There were just so many times where you could stop and say “wait, what I am I doing and why am I doing it?”

That was a full on, conscious of what you were doing, choice to go eat foods you know are not going to help with your goals. You will need to get inside your own head and figure out why you did that.

No need to be concerned. It was impossible for you to switch your body over to a lipogenic, fat creating pattern in so short of a time. All weight gained was water or glycogen, soon to be eliminated when you resume your normal eating pattern. If anything, it was all a metabolic positive. You could probably repeat it every Weekend and be just fine.

Thanks for that!!

I truly fell of the horse this weekend with Alcohol, and ironically horses were definitely involved. I live in Louisville, KY and the KY Derby is a week long, yes we turn it into a week long affair here of parties, betting, bourbon and food. I am totally glad you shared. I found myself craving carbs on Sunday after 3 days Thurby, Oaks and Derby of indulging in beer. Gained 5 lbs in 4 days. Back at it again and glad to be carb free again…

Today, Al Roker from the Today Show was on my military base and Smuckers fed 3,000 people. There was sausage, chicken, biscuits, pancakes, etc., I managed to eat only one biscuit and a few sausages and chicken. No iced sweetened coffee, jam etc… I wanted it but, nope, Mothers Day is this weekend and I know there will be something there that might tempt me.

I’m on day 3 of being back to business as usual, and I feel the inflammation from the weekend almost gone. Tonight’s my last dinner before I start a 72 hour fast

(Scott) #17

That should do it!

It took exactly 7 days to lose all the water weight/possible fat I had gained last weekend, including an additional few ounces. Lesson learned!!
