AMEN ^^^
#nosympathyforcriminals
as in, none. Zero. Don’t commit crimes. How hard is that.

heckyeah.

Yes and when Michelle Obama’s healthier school lunch thing was going on, kids complained and threw out their lunches because they wanted what they were used to.
If parents were serving better food en masse from birth onwards kids may then reject the processed, carb heavy school food but this is unrealistic .
#keepinitreal

None of my brood ever ate school lunch; I was too cheap to pay for it X multiple children when making sandwiches was far cheaper. Making a kid’s lunch takes about 3 minutes and costs next to nothing per lunch.

In “The Big Fat Surprise,” Nina Teicholz wrote about a study that was done to lower cholesterol. Polyunsaturated fats replaced the saturated fats in the experimental group. Well, cholesterol did get lowered in the experimental group but cancer and suicide increased in that same group compared to the control.

That little tidbit from her book made a big impression on me and made me wonder about all the mental health problems going on today. How much could possiblely be attributable to just the change in our cooking oils?

Keto has helped my daughter with her ADHD. Maybe keto could be an answer to helping the prison population. How many people are in there due to mental health? How many people are there because they had poor impulse control from ADHD for example?

Feeding people better starting when they are young and keeping their minds healthier is probably a great way to keep them out of prison in the first place. Feeding them better in prison maybe is a better way to help get them out with improved frames of mind.

Amen sister!

I agree in principal. However, would you react positively if you were forced to eat a keto diet that didn’t include nice steaks, salmon, a pile of chicken thighs, and some nice cheeses? How many would just abandon it upon release, 95% most likely.

And a reduction of health care costs? Maybe for people serving long sentences this would pay off in the end. But I believe forcibly cutting carbs would be met with great resistance from inmates no matter how much they complain about the status quo. More trouble than it’s worth.

Yeah, I know. It’s a nice thought, though.

@BlueViolet I like you and don’t want to come across as argumentative, but if you will, I’d like to give you a little perspective on what it’s like to be a low income parent.

First, priority one is to keep a roof over your kids’ heads. This often means working multiple jobs. My son is grown now, but when he was growing up I never worked less than 2 jobs, sometimes 3, at the same time. When your kid qualifies for free breakfast AND lunch (saving you both time and money), who’s gonna turn that down?

Second, I would bet a lot of low-income parents probably believe a school meal is better than what they could provide, seeing as how school meals are based on the “healthy” food pyramid.

Low income parents love their kids just as much as their better-paid counterparts, and they are doing the best they know how. The tragedy is that they’ve been indoctrinated - like most people here were before they saw the light - and truly don’t know any better.

A couple other thoughts… first, I’ve never seen a food bank giving out ribeyes and salmon. I’m on disability now so I qualify for a monthly box. It’s 90% carbs. Bread, rice, beans, pasta, canned corn, canned potatoes, cereal, etc. Same for a local church that gives out free food. Carbs, everywhere you look. I accept it and stash it because I’m a little bit of a prepper, and bad food is better than no food. But if I relied on that box I could never be keto.

Also, many low income families live in motels (or their cars!) with no cooking facilities. Granted, you can do keto without cooking but I don’t see how it can be nutritious over the long haul.

Just my two cents. Take it with a grain of salt, just don’t forget the magnesium and potassium!

I am not really sure you are responding to what I wrote. Do you think it’s fine for a government to choose who the winners and losers are in the market? Never has centralized planning worked efficiently. People who are pro-capitalism (which I am) want lower taxes for everyone. Then we get to choose how we interact with the market. When the government takes my money and transfers it to a large corporation through tax credits, (which is what they are doing because they have to get revenue in other ways - raise taxes on businesses that don’t get the credit or from consumers) they are deciding that large corporation can use my money better than I can. It also means that the large corporation can then slash their prices and undermine competitors that are not getting the same sweetheart deals. That’s how so many mom and pops were put out of business when Walmart came to town. So there were minimum wage jobs created, but middle class business owner lost their livelihoods because they couldn’t stay in business. It wasn’t as if Walmart was being rewarded because they were more efficient, it’s because they had a government granted advantage. And in general, what do you think happens as soon as the tax credits disappear? Typically those industries or businesses up and move to the next locale where they are offered the advantage.

But this really isn’t the board for a discussion on economics so I’ll end it at that.

I getcha @Sharon_E.

This I agree with to an extent; again, for the parents who care more about their kids than about satisfying their own selfish desires.
This indoctrination, (unlike me ha) isn’t classist; as we all know the healthy pyramid con fooled us all from all socioeconomic strata, for decades.

Yeah, I know the types you mean. I’ve seen them in the checkout line with their food stamp eligible items in front, and their beer and smokes right behind. In my limited experience, I’ve seen that more in cities than in rural areas. In my rural area I feel like it’s more a case of ignorance. They are just 20-30 years behind the times. (There are literally people here who still use outhouses and get their water from the creek; I know one family living in 2 tents in the woods, with only a campfire to cook over and no refrigeration. I believe we are the second poorest county in the state.) It will be a long time before keto, or even just low carb, catches on here. Even people who try to be healthy and have their own gardens are growing stuff like corn and potatoes. It’s just what they know.

The church that gives out food can NOT understand why I refuse a free Little Caesar’s pizza, or as much bread as I can carry. You should see the look on their faces, it just mind-boggles them that I turn it down. (I only go there for the free produce, and sometimes they have H&B stuff.) Anyway, yeah, ignorance.

To clarify what I said earlier, I am NOT giving a free pass to the low income parents feeding their kids soda and ice cream. Everybody knows that’s bad for you. Shame on them. But you don’t have to be low income to feed your kids junk. The affluent, educated folks who do that are the ones I really get frustrated with.

I feel like I’m rambling so I’ll shut up on the subject.

(hottie turned hag) #53

Oh yes, like my fat 19y/o academic star Purdue student daughter who refuses to even reduce the carbs in her diet let alone go keto despite having all advantages needed to know and do better.

Yanno I’m not much of a conspiracy theorist sort but I AM of the belief that it’s all 'bout dat paper so I lean towards the big agro/corporations with much paper to gain by the food pyramid cooking this up to lead us all down the path that lines their pockets.

Docs stick with what’s known/protocol for fear of their jobs as they’re no longer solo practitioners who can do as they please; they’re accountable to those above them who have again, much :dollar: to gain by keeping the status quo. No way the implementation of the high carb pyramid doesn’t correlate to the obesity/diabetes stats skyrocketing as they have. (to state the obvious).

#54

It always comes down to the almighty dollar, doesn’t it? I’ve said it before, I wish I had been born about 200 years ago, when it was more of a barter economy and people only ate what they grew on the farm or traded with other farms. I only see our current culture getting worse as the corporations get a stranglehold on the politicians.

#55

I agree. This has been drifting towards dreaded political hot button topics in places. Nothing too offensive, but if y’all could head back to discussing the original topic that would be great.

#56

I wouldn’t have thought that bemoaning Big Food would be a political hot button here? I see it mentioned all the time. And the movie is political, in part. Not sure how we’re not on topic?

(squirrel-kissing paper tamer) #57

Big food isn’t the issue at all. It’s more along the lines of low income parenting, mass shootings, sides of the political isle, corporate take overs, innocent people in the prison system, taxes, #nosympathyforcriminals, health care.

People are keeping it civil for now. Let’s just keep it that way, that’s all. I don’t have a problem with people sharing views but it’s just a matter of time before someone gets inflamed and if that happens we’ll just lock it down.

I will say I’ve seen the documentary and it was an eye opener.

#58

This thread has been all over the place since the very beginning. But as soon as I express an opinion, I get warned. That’s fine, I’ll just keep my mouth shut from now on.

(Lazy, Dirty Keto 😝) #59

All of the things PetaMarie noted in her last post here didn’t pertain to only you if you read through the thread.

#60

Yeah, but nothing was said about it until I chimed in.

(Lazy, Dirty Keto 😝) #61

I am aware, but that doesn’t mean it was said because of you only.

#62

I’m aware I can be defensive at times so maybe I’m over-reacting but it sure felt personal.

(Lazy, Dirty Keto 😝) #63

I think that PetaMarie and carol are simply doing their jobs as admins. I know that some have experienced the feeling of being personally attacked, but I don’t think that’s the case here
