Fatty liver per the ultrasound

(Omar) #1

I had ultrasound done on my liver.

the doctor said there is some fat on my liver but the liver function is OK.

my question

is the tummy size an indicator of fat on the liver?

or they are two different things

the second question is what shall I do to get rid of such fat on the liver?
I am on keto but when I eat the slightest amount of carbs like a cup of yogurt or a cup of nuts I feel it in my billy almost immediately.

maybe I should get back to carnivore or three day fasting.

thanks

I hear about fatty liver in the context of alcohol - are you at zero alcohol intake?

(Omar) #3

yes

I do not drink alcohol

there is non alcoholic fatty liver as well

Advanced liver disease can certainly cause swelling of the abdominal region (largely due to fluid retention I believe) but milder NAFLD can cause insulin resistance which can make the loss of belly fat difficult.

Keto is usually very good for NAFLD but fasting can also help.

I think (not a doctor) that tummy size is just lots of “bad” fat (fat stored around the organs instead of all over the body under the skin).

A quick search on Google “reasons for nafld” gives you lots of clues but - not much help as they are pretty general (i.e. one of them is “metabolic syndrome”).

If I remember correctly, fasting is the best way to target the “bad” fat - I think Dr. Fung states that in several YouTube videos. If you have done keto and/or Carnivore for a while - probably won’t change much (especially as everyone complains about “stubborn belly fat”).

thank you @anon54735292 @RobC

very useful

so keto help reduce fat around liver. I think it already did.

my triglycerides went down from 200 to 68 but I never got ultrasound for my liver pre keto. so maybe more fat was on my liver pre keto.

abdomen size does not necessarily indicate fatty liver unless in advanced stage. (very usefull statement safi )

the only reason I am asking because my belly and abdomin was quite big pre keto then I managed to get it almost flat. then I start eating large amount of nuts. I finish one kilo in three to five days and my belly got much larger but not as large as pre keto.

so my wife saying that I have fatty liver because of keto.

I explained to her that first my abdomen size does not mean a fatty liver. secondly my abdomen size and weight increase is caused by eating too much nuts not saturated fat.

But she does not buy that so I stoped talking about it.

I’d bet good money it was.

The body wants to get rid of organ fat first because that is the storage area of last resort.
When you lose weight in a healthy way (such as keto) you should lose it from places such as the liver first :slightly_smiling_face:

Nuts will do that. They are quite carby when eaten in quantity and also fairly high in omega 6’s so can also cause inflammation. Small amounts of nuts are good for you though

Sorry I have no definitive answers but my thoughts and questions are

How long have you been on keto? If it has “only” been so many months, then of course that is great and a lot better than 2 weeks, but may not be enough time to have burned off all that fat.

Maybe give it a few more months, like 6 or 3 if you’re nervous and then retest. Compare test results. Obviously you want to see it going in the right direction.

If you’ve been on keto for 5 years or something and still have fatty liver then I don’t know what to do. Yes maybe 0g carbs?

I have or did have non alcoholic fatty liver, I’m not worried, just keto’ing, I’ll get an ultrasound in 6 or 12 months.

I have been researching keto+exercise. A dirty word to be sure, but there is evidence of greater fat loss. There are papers for that by Volek et al, I fear one day I may have to do more than read papers :- |

The drop in your triglycerides is phenomenal. That’s an indicator of good health right there.

low carb since February 2018 to May 2018

keto June 2018 todate

thanks

the result in 2017 was pre keto

(You've tried everything else; why not try bacon?) #12

Belly size, not necessarily, but if your belly fat is loose and jiggly, it is not visceral fat. And in any case, the best way to get rid of it is to stay keto. Since fructose is metabolized in the liver, stay away from anything that contains any fructose or sucrose (which is half fructose). It may take a while for your visceral fat to go away, but it will. Exercise to increase your metabolism and reduce your insulin resistance—that should also help.

That’s a decent amount of time, well done on the trigs. But I was thinking 12 to 24 months before I get think about another liver untrasound

Yes and no. Yes it can be the liver, I could feel mine when sleeping on my right side, Dr Lustig speaks of people “having livers down to the knees”, they do grow and extend to compensate for lack of functionality due to sugar/fat and this pushes other organs.

But NO. Tummy size would be larger all by itself for its own reasons.

So you can’t use tummy size as a fatty liver test. You need the ultrasound.

Hmm, not maybe, definitely. If you had any excess fat on your body the liver would definitely have had its share and very early in the plot. The first place for excess glycogen is the muscles, then the liver, then around organs, finally in other vital organs.

I can’t see how anyone’s liver could escape excess fat. Keto is the answer not the problem here.

If you’re worried retest in 3 or 6 months.
