Fats on SAD

(Jack Brien) #1

I’m the only one doing keto in our family, but I have a small influence on what the kids eat. I try to give my eldest bacon and eggs for breakfast whenever possible, but he has this awful habit of wanting a bacon sandwich instead, or after a steak tea he will raid the cupboards for chocolate. Removing these options is not an option, believe me, I’ve had the arguments! So I’m a little paranoid that I’m simply adding to his dietary woes by giving him the keto foods without the keto benefits :frowning: The alternative would be toast or porridge or some such. What should I do?!?

Thanks, but he’s not keto. I guess my concern is with the fats interaction with the insulin increase from the carby stuff.

There is no reason to guess at this. Test (at home or in the doctor’s office) and determine his insulin sensitivity. Not everyone needs to be on a ketogenic diet.

As a for instance here, Ive read two different opinions on this recently:
Don’t mix fat and carbs as it leads to overeating and
weight gain: https://www.facebook.com/364516160372874/posts/1186420918182390/
Add fat to carbs to mitigate and slow the insulinogenic effects: https://www.fatfueled.family/blog/2018/10/24/our-top-5-hacks-for-raising-healthy-eaters

When he’s eating your keto foods he’s eating less carbs than if he were eating a SAD meal. Even though he’s still eating carbs he’s probably eating less of them overall. Which sounds like the best you can do.

I think that’s the conclusion I’ve come to, but the paranoia still lingers.
