Fat or Fast, what is the best way to recover after a cheat meal/day?

fat
fasting

I am just curious, after a cheat meal or drinking a few (too many) beers, what is the best way to get into keto the next day?

I usually do some exercise to try to burn any of the carbs I ate.

Mostly, I wonder if it would be better to eat a bunch of fat, or to simply fast for 16 to 24 hours?

Very curious, thanks for the help!

Fasting is always a win, but can be tougher after a binge.

Well, great question! After one year I did the cheat for Xmas. Full blown out cheat. I was amazed how much the cravings came back. So after my cheat day, the next day was a less cheat day, (20 hr if, with 4 hrs food including dessert not as much.
Next day
23 hr fast better macros about 30 carbs from veggies
Today
back on the horse. 23 hr fast macros in place <10 carbs -all veggies. Note: hungry as hell but better

Tomorrow ext fast 48 hours. Cant wait!!!

Fasting no doubt.

Indulgence Days are a great excuse for a fast and if you want maximum benefit add a heavy workout

Good luck and much success in your journey in IF/EF Keto WOE

Go for the 1 -2 punch. Fat fast-then get into a full on fast.

What I do is eat keto to satiety first.

It’s been said but I’ll offer my POV.

  1. Go for a HIIT workout (if not too hung-over, I often “run off” a hangover using a long run), then eat 1-2 meals of HIGH fat. THEN fast for 1-2 days depending on how you feel. You’ll be in pretty deep ketosis mid day two depending on your level of fat adaption.

OR

  1. Start eating lots of fat first, 1-2 meals. Then start fasting, get up morning of day 2, having fasted for 12 or more hours, then do some HIIT or a long/slow workout. You should hit ketosis later in the day, once again, depending on your level of fat adaption.

I’ve used this protocol several times, mixing IF/Fasting/Keto with lots of exercise so I can tell you from experience it works.

In the future, consider keeping the beer to a minimum (maybe 1 or 2) then switch to wine or some alcohol in water with some lime/lemon juice. It will be easier to get back into ketosis then (I can use this trick and don’t get kicked out but I’ve been at this over a year).

Good luck!

^^^^^ This, get your body using fats again and then do a nice fast, 36-48 hrs. should get you right back on track.

I just go for a fast. Ate somewhat poorly this weekend and Thanksgiving (Thursday), doing a 4.5 day fast now. But I’ve been doing this for 5 years, so I move into being fat adapted quite quickly.
