I’m considering doing a fat fast next week. I’ve read about several different tversions online — wondering if it works and if the weight stays off once you return to regular low carb lifestyle??
Fat Fast? Yes or No?
There is a lot of data we are missing before this question can be answered with anything worth reading. What does low carb mean to you? What do your macros look like on average? What is your weight and height? Are you currently ketogenic or low carb?
If you treat ketosis like a yo yo, it will treat your body like one. It’s not a short term lose a few pounds plan. If you are in ketosis and lose weight in the beginning, it’s usually water weight. If you do keto short term and lose weight, you will gain weight back once you are no longer keto. Whether that weight is fat or water is up to your body.
If you are not fat adapted (the second phase of ketosis usually achieved in 6-8 weeks of strict keto), all a fat fast will do for you is help you get into keto and, depending how long you do it, it will get you to fat adaptation. Once you add carbs back, you’ll gain short term water weight. If the carbs you add back are more than your personal metabolism can handle you’ll continue to gain weight up to your starting weight and possibly beyond.
It might, it might not. If your scale says you lost a couple pounds on a fat fast, don’t be surprised if it comes back. And, if you’re trying to break a ‘stall’ it might not come back.
It also depends on what your regualr carb lifestyle is, and your other macros too.
I don’t recall reading anything that indicates it will cause harm. It used to be recommended for something like 3 days, but I’m sure there’s more current guidance on the length of the fat fast.
I’ve been doing Keto (net carbs under 20 and total under 30) since January 19th.
I don’t touch grains —I have been using stevia (kind of wondering if that is a bad idea).
I’ve lost 16 pounds — but I feel like I’m stalling.
Weekly macro averages between 5-7% carbs,20-25% protein, and about 70% fat.
I am wondering if a fat fast would give me the extra push to see the scale moving — and wondering if I went back to regular keto if I would regret having done a fat fast…
Well, I’ll say that less carbs doesn’t mean more keto. Maybe a fat fast will do something, maybe it won’t, maybe it’s time to ditch the scale and just let your body be in ketosis because it will shed body fat in its own time. If you have less fat to lose, you will lose less fat. You could consider fasting and various other things but, if you know you are 20g of net carbs or less, moderate protein, high fat, that’s all it really takes. Results will come in their own time.
I used Dana Carpender’s fat fast cookbook (I think there are 2) to break a stall twice. It basically boils down to having 4 of the 250 calorie meals. They are all 75-90% fat. It worked. It is not recommended to do it regularly so as not to lose lean body massage, but intermittently is fine. Love her! And no, didn’t gain it back. And it only took a day each time to get things moving again. YMMV.
