Tons of recipes on Pinterest for fat bombs that look delicious…who actually makes/uses them? When/why/how often? And does it depend on whether you’re trying to lose weight or not?
Fat bombs?
I look at them as mostly treats. If you’re not eating enough fat consistently, they are a way to add fat quickly & easily, but you should concentrate on adding fat to your protein & carbs for the most part.
I will also make them in advance of doing a 3-day Feldman Protocol before my physical next week, since I haven’t had a cholesterol test in a long time & don’t know where I am (if you don’t know what that is, google it - fascinating research on cholesterol, done by a software engineer!).
I definitely avoid them. They’re too tasty and highly caloric for me. My goal is still to lose weight, so they serve no purpose for me except to feed the occasional PMS craving when I’m more lenient on calories. If you’re trying to eat at maintenance, they’d probably super handy
I use fat bombs extensively for the members in my family trying to gain (or not lose) weight while adhering to a HFLC diet. Fat bombs and smoothies are an excellent way to consume in calories given the appetite suppression being in ketosis causes.
Other people use them. I cannot speak to their success. I do not. I tend to not worry about eating fat to fill a macro, and when I do, I find my progress slows and I start to lose LBM.
I am considering adapting a recipe that I just learned for fake sugar, which would technically be a fat bomb (heavy cream, dark chocolate, egg yolks and sweetener), but I think of it as a custard, I would eat it very occasionally, as a dessert. I would not make it a daily indulgence, as daily dessert is a bad habit I picked up from the girl I dated before I met my wife, and I’m pretty sure it’s the main thing that took my set point from 240 to 265+. So, it’s not really a habit I’m looking to replicate, even if I can make it fit macros.
I am trying to lose weight and improve my health. That means eating more of what I consider whole and real foods and fewer things that use a lot of fake ingredients, like sugar alcohols or other artificial sweeteners. And yes, I think the horrid taste of stevia qualifies it as artificial, even though it’s a plant extract.
Clever. I have had mixed results, but I’ve never gotten up to 5K calories…
Fat bombs are kind of redundant when you are fat adapted.
Why would I want to eat dietary fat when my body is more than capable of fueling my daily needs?
The only fat bomb I tend to enjoy is chocolate mousse, that is because sometimes I just want to enjoy something yummy, I know it will be doing my weight loss no justice.
They are great for beginners and getting the fat in, but I find some people have a hard time letting go.
I’ve seen some people on Keto for over 6 months who should be entirely adapted still eating up to 200g of fat a day and wondering why they don’t lose weight, I’ve found they have no idea what fat adaption is and have been more stressed about staying in ketosis for months at a time.
haha I feel like I am one of those people who has no real idea of what fat adaption is !
II use fat bombs as a snack if a have a craving for sweet or at times before I go to the gym. A great recipe that I love is on Pinterest- 3 ingredient Cheesecake Keto Fat Bombs.
No, too lazy. I can’t be bothered fooling around in the kitchen any more. And I don’t trust myself around sweet treats.
I do make microwaved flax muffins. Main ingredients are flax, eggs, and olive oil, so there’s lots of fat. But I use savory seasonings, no sweetener.
If I feel like eating cream cheese, I just eat an ounce of cream cheese. Quick and easy, no cleanup.
I made one large batch of fat bombs when I first started keto. Maybe 50 ice cube sized bombs. They were coconut, coconut milk, and liquid stevia. I think. They pretty much tasted like Mounds minus the chocolate. They were an excellent crutch to get me through the first weeks of keto. U looked forward to them and had one after lunch and after dinner. By the time I was fat adapted, about five weeks in, I no longer craved them and was down to one bomb every couple of days. I think there are a few left in the freezer. Somewhere behind all the meat that I now crave!!
I think they’re a great crutch to help get you through the first few weeks but most people I know who are months into keto no longer use them. I just don’t crave sweets, and when I do I have an actual piece of dark chocolate with no ill effects.
