Fat adaption and keto urine strips

(Heather ) #1

This reasoning may be too simplistic but I am wondering if you could use the Urine strips to tell if you’re not fat adapted? Ive had a blood meter for quite a while and I thought this would be a good way to make use of my old urine strips. If your dumping out ketones through urine would that mean that your body isn’t utilizing the ketones? And thus show that I’m not fat adapted?

I’ve been keto for almost two years and I still show color on the sticks when I’m in deep ketosis.

I used to get moderate readings on my keto stix while I was adapting and as soon as I became adapted, all results turned to trace, giving the indication my body was now using those ketones it was wasting through urine.

I don’t ever get high blood readings unless I fast for days and days. Both the blood ketone test strips and urine test strips are kind of redundant after adaption. They weren’t made for us in mind, therefore they aren’t really giving us the information we need.

So I’ve been doing this since May and my ketones are always through the roof, they’ve even been upwards of 6, my glucose is pretty stable in 60-70s. I did cheat when I went on vacation in October but was the only time. I’m probably not fat adapted then right?

I’ve strict keto for 5 months and my strips light up most days like a christmas tree. I’m pretty sure I am fat adapted and have been doing 18/6 and OMAD fasting for up to 3 months. There are mornings where I wake up and can taste ketones. This usually happens post fast days.

I’ve been strict keto for a year-and-a-half and I still show dark color on the urine strips. My understanding is there are plenty of people in this camp, and so it is not a definitive test of fat adaptation.
