Fat adaptation

(Jen ) #1

Good morning everyone!

I was listening to the dudes podcast earlier in the car and Richard said a question he gets a lot is “How do I know if I am fat adapted?”. His answer was “When you are, you’ll know”.

Since I’m a glutton for punishment, I’m going to list what has changed since starting Keto (it will be two weeks tomorrow).

-acetone breath. Super gross, someone please tell me this goes away- I’ve had it since day 3- I can’t tolerate any artificial sweeteners so sugar free candy/gum is out. I have been brushing my teeth a lot and not getting too close to people.
-Ketostix- since Day 4 I have been spilling moderate to large ketones in my urine.
-increased energy- I’ve been doing several small workouts through the day (I am recovering from a very large abdominal surgery 8 weeks ago).
-10 lbs fat GONE.
-2 lb weight gain which I am attributing to working out and I can see/feel my quad muscles again.
-this extra skin… oh Lordy, lol.
-just feeling better in general. I have chronic pain and I’ve been skipping one dose of my nerve pill per day and reducing by half the Tylenol that I take per day.
-carb intake is usually 10 g/day.

I second guess myself constantly so I have no idea if I’m adapted or not.

Help, please?! Thanks!

So there’s no magic yes or not, but right now I would say no since you are spilling ketones in your urine. Eventually, your keto stix will read low ketones even though you are deep in ketosis, this is because your body is using up the ketones and not spilling them from your body.

But that’s not a bad thing! Congrats on your weight loss and feeling better!!

This does get somewhat better, but not fully.

Great!

-10 lbs fat GONE.

How do yo know you lose 10 lbs of fat?

-2 lb weight gain which I am attributing to working out and I can see/feel my quad muscles again.

Likely true. Great!

-this extra skin… oh Lordy, lol.

This is a consequence of weight loss. I have done this many times with different diets. Every time except this time has resulted in lots of stretch marks, extreme itchiness, and crazy loose skin . The only difference this time is my fasting regimen (two 5-day fasts per month)

-just feeling better in general. I have chronic pain and I’ve been skipping one dose of my nerve pill per day and reducing by half the Tylenol that I take per day.
Sounds like you are doing well!
-carb intake is usually 10 g/day.
On target!

I don’t think fat adaptation is easily measurable. Personally, I think it’s a sliding scale. You get more adapted the longer you are on the diet. Eventually, you just are…

Hey, JayBee. The best explanation of this I’ve read yet is from nutritionist Amy Berger. May I share a link to her blog post about fat adaptation? http://www.tuitnutrition.com/2016/01/dont-be-a-ketard1.html

Its imposible for me to be sure. But, I would say no.

I am glad you are feelign so well.

I am not fat adapted, but every time I read the experience of someone who is they explain it as they feel a significant increase in energy levels and they don’t feel hungry. Many have also mentioned forgetting to eat for 12 hours or more.
