Recently, my doctors prescribed both Rx blood pressure meds and OTC Nutrafol supps that must be taken with food. No stomach problems, but I’m worried these may require food for absorption. Anybody know for sure? (docs not keto or fasting-friendly) I was doing great on keto with 18 hour intermittent fasting, and now that I’m breaking the fast to take the meds I’ve hit a 3 week stall. I fear coffee or a little fat isn’t enough food for the meds. Thanks!
Fasting with Medications that require food
You might get more answers on the fasting forum, but I’ve been down this road a month ago when I started Alternate Day Fasts. The two most common suggestions were have some pure fat - a bit of butter or coconut oil - or a small green salad. I’ve been eating a teaspoon or so of Kerry Gold butter.
We’re used to thinking of ounces of food, but if every molecule in your pill had to bond to a molecule of fat, I’d bet an ounce of butter would leave lots of butter available after every molecule of medicine was used up.
Thanks, CFL Bob!
I have to keep my carbs too low to fit in an extra salad, plus it seems too much like it would break an intermittent fast – but the butter sounds perfect. Your explanation makes sense about molecules bonding – plus, any excuse to eat Kerry Gold is fine with me!
I’ll give your advice a try!
A friend of mine heard of people fasting on by taking meds with one tablespoon of heavy cream. Since I am a total fraidy-cat, I tried 1 T heavy cream, meds, another 1 T heavy cream right after the meds. It WORKED! I had also heard that fat doesn’t “break” the fast as much as protein or even low carb vegetables would. Losing more weight and getting physical therapy is REALLY helping my knees so I only take NSAIDs a few times a week now. I’m hoping the autophagy I get from short EF with water and salt only is also going to make a difference over time. The physical therapy is great for building up muscles to support the weight bearing joints (hips, knees, ankles & feet)j. When we lose weight, our posture changes and we need to strengthen the muscles we are able to use differently.
Thanks so much for your information regarding anti-inflammatory supplements, and where to buy them. I am already taking a few of the ones on your list, and plan to order the rest from Swanson Vitamins. I am in my 4th week of keto WOE and so have not yet started fasting; however, I am noticing some increased knee pain with my walks and stair climbing. Hopefully, these will help, so I am not taking loads of NSAIDs,
Are you saying you did not take your meds wile fasting then when started eating again you took them with fat? I am fasting and am thinking just not taking any of them except my thyroid meds (only take 1/2). On day 3 of water only. Feels wrong to be popping all my hormones and even the bupropion! Took 1/2 yesterday and forgot to take today and I am fine. Day one did water only, day 2 did a soft dry fast and today water again. Waaaaay less hungry on dry than with water! Almost broke down but decided to flex that will power muscle. Ya meds and fasting… tricky!!!
