I think, for sure, that a person’s sensitivity, or lack of, to insulin is a hugely important variable in the weight loss equation. It will definitely change the how and the rate people lose.
Fasting questions- insulin levels
YES, YES a resounding YES! There is a distinct difference between eating extremely low calories (starvation) and being in a fasted state. There is a hormonal difference between the two. Few calories is not at all the same thing as no calories. Further more, insulin needs to remain low during the fasted state or your not going to reap the benefits of increased insulin sensitivity. As we know, this is the hormone which is responsible for storing fat (among other things). Any food energy coming in must be dealt with by an insulin response. If you’re not in a totally fasted state then you’re just likely to drive down metabolism. I can’t recommend Dr Fung’s book enough. It’s critical that we understand why and how.
(ps I hope this didn’t come off the wrong way to anyone. I’m just really passionate about our need to be our own Dr’s and scientists here)
Over this short timeframe fasting may not reduce BMR. Over time it does.
Your BMR also drops as you lose weight.
