Fasting Patterns

(Jill Lothian) #1

Hi Everyone,

Can I ask what everyone fasting patterns are? I have been eating OMAD round about 7pm-8pm. Have read so much information saying this is a bad way to fast and should only be done once a week? I am finding it really easy but also don’t want to do any damage. Eating around 1200 calories at the one meal I have, should I be mixing it up a bit?

Thanks

J

Fung & Moore’s Complete Guide to Fasting has examples of fasting plans…

one example from the book…
fasting

I think it’s safe to say that if you want to avoid getting stuck at a metabolic Set Point then mixing it up does make sense. Keep your body guessing. As to how long it would take to apply a pattern before you hit that is something our more learned members may be able to answer.

Thanks that is a great help!

Opinions on eating habits are like belly buttons, everyone has one. Some opinions even though they come from credentialed folk are unwise.
What I have done is to read up and research for myself to get basic facts, and then find someone (like Dr. Fung for instance) whose opinion I trust and plan accordingly.

I usually have a coffee in the morning when I get up 4 to 7 ish (I’m frequntly up early), breakfast around noon to 2ish as hunger dictates. Dinner 6 to 8ish. Some days I don’t get around to eating early afternoon so just have the evening meal. I average less than 1000 calories a day (per trackkng app) although some days I have 1600 (some days I’m just hungrier). I’m not trying to cut calories and do eat to satiety but I have 50 excess fat pounds also fueling me ATM. I do the monthly zornfast coming up this week. This past weekend I did a 43 hour random fast as I just didn’t get around to eating and then just didn’t feel like eating that night.

Thanks I am looking to lose a lot of weight too but I have read that cutting calories can cause metobolic issues!!

If you are eating a typical diet and not in ketosis I. E. Eating carbs and simply cutting calories then yes it will slow your metabolism (see Dr fung for full explanation) however, my understanding is that when in ketosis and fueling via fat if you don’t eat it then your body takes it from itself thereby you are not actually in a deficit situation just in an alternate source situation. If you eat it all then it’s easy for your body to just pull it from your gut and has no need to go rooting through your stores to use your excess body fat.

Please correct me if I’m wrong (as I’m still getting my head around this too!).

I have read on the forum that the body (under optimal fat burning conditions - minimal insulin etc) can liberate 31.5 calories of energy from every 1lb of adipose tissue (fat) daily. Therefore, if I have 40lb of fat available, I have a daily energy availability of 1,260 calories. If I am fasting and thus relying entirely on that energy source and I am also exceeding the rate at which my body can supply that energy, what happens then? Isn’t that the point at which the set point changes?

you all know so much information. I have read loads and still feel completely useless!!!

though not much use if it’s wrong  I’d rather be corrected than spread bogus info.

I’m doing OMAD for the last 3 months after about 6 months of EF/random longer than 24 hour fasts. But the weight loss has stopped but for awhile the inches kept coming off. I would say I am probably 20% BF now. So it shouldn’t shock me that the weight loss has stopped.

I’d like to do longer fasts, but honestly my body really fights it. I actually get hungry at 23 hours! Plus I started exercising with weights more regularly and it just isn’t happening. But with my work schedule and life, OMAD fits perfectly! But now I really need to optimize my nutritional content and that can get as annoying as weighing and measuring food.

But if I don’t fast, I don’t lose weight even on strict keto. I still have so much to learn about keto, fasting and my body.

My recommendation - don’t get stuck in OMAD if you have weight to lose! Change it up. Do 36 hours, 48 hour fast…16 hour fasts…no fasting! Trick that body! What everyone said before is key!

Yes 31.5 is the value Richard has consistently provided us. And yes re fasting. If doing an extended fast and if you can only pull 1200 calories from your stores but you know you are burning much more then you could do what is termed a fat fast in which you consume fat to supplement. Some people can realize if/when they need to do this because while fasting they will get cold extremities or start feeling off. They have a BPC or some coconut oil and feel better pretty quickly. At 178 pounds and 5’ 4" I have enough fat to “feed” me easily while fasting these days so don’t really worry about having anything beyond my morning coffee.

Also, one of great benefits of losing weight via fasting is autophagy.per Dr. Fung, he has not had to send a single patient to plastics to have excess skin removed after losing weight, even those that lost over 100 pounds. He says that while fasting your body is doing a lot of housekeeping and literally using up all that skin, blood vessels, etc. that would otherwise just be hanging around. I think that is a huge plus and reason alone to fast.

I get that “off” feeling after about 18 hours and some bone broth usually fixes it, so I guess there is enough fat in that to keep me going until meal time. When I’ve done a 36/48 hour fast, my overnight sleep seems to reset everything again, but it’s the early afternoon bit I struggle with.

(Candy Lind) #15

Absolutely true unless you are fat-adapted. But I suggest you mix it up, too - keep your body guessing. I’m going to feast today for Fat Tuesday, then see if I can make it through Zornfast.

(Trish) #16

If bone broth helps I wonder if it could actually be an electrolyte thing?

(Rob) #17

maybe, but most likely potassium than anything else as my mag and sodium are adequately supplemented.

I always try salt before resorting to broth.
