Fasting on keto advice for newbie

I am doin a 3 day water fast and going to stopp drinking so mutch coffe and only have a soda or two on saturdays (not while fasting afcourse). Thats my long term goal.

I have been compulsevly drinking coffe for years, its the first thing i drink in the morning. i was thinking of during the fast limiting my self to only one cup of coffe a day during my fast. I also consume 2-4 cans of diet soda a day.

I porred all my soda cans in the toilet today, so i am stopping that today. Four days before the fast starts. My toughts are that drasticly limiting my coffe intake and quiting sodas on the same day as the fast start might be to extreme, i am shaking becouse i am so scared of how bad the witrawls will be.

On keto and intermitten fasting i sometimes get horrible breath, is taking a sugarfree mint going to be breaking my fast? i talk to alot of people during my day, having bad breath is not an option.

A cup of coffe a day, will that break my fast?

Can i do vitamin suplements wihile fasting?

any toughts or oppinions will be greatly apprisiated :slight_smile:

Hi, I am also new to Keto and have done one 36hr fast. I have read Dr Jason Fung’s fasting book and he says you can have coffee. I fast 16hrs every day and start the day with a bulletproof coffee. So good. Then I have another coffee at lunchtime with full fat cream and then I eat a high fat, low protein dinner with greens. For the longer fast, I had bone broth. You will get bad breath if you are in ketosis. I also use a sugar-free mint. I am glad to hear that you got rid of the sodas, so maybe go easy on yourself and not give up the coffee as well. Dr Jason Fung also says in his book that you can have a multivitamin during a fast. I also have a glass of water each morning with a small amount of organic seaweed salt in it, it helps to stop my muscles cramping.
I honestly cannot recommend enough that you read Dr Jason Fung’s book, it is a really great resource, especially for those of us just starting out.

Good luck. :grinning::sunglasses:

When I decide to detox caffeine I manage it easily as I’ve found a good way to avoid nasty withdrawals. All I do is go without it for as long as I can without any symptoms of withdrawal, then I have a coffee. Then again, as long as I can without symptoms and a coffee when needed. Each time the length without increases and it only takes three or for days to free myself from the addiction. I’ve done this using caffeine tablets too.

Generally black coffee is fine on fasts, if you wanted to do that.

I take my supplements every day regardless of fasting or not, but you’ll need to check the ingredients of your own supplements to see if they’re safe or not.

Great advice :slight_smile: i just ordered the book on audible, tnx for tips. when you say longer fast, how long are we talking? i would prefer to do it by only water, vitamins, coffe and salt afcourse. Bone broth and added fat, while fasting? isent the whole point that the body needs to use the fat stored to produce energi?

I understand your confusion. Dr Jason Fung says that the bone broth will help with providing the body with nutrients and the calories that it has are so minimal that it will not ruin the effect of the fast. There are some people in the Keto/ Fasting world that would never have anything at all except water. My personal belief is that you have to do what is right for you.
The extended fast I did was 36 hours, and I was totally surprised that I was not hungry at all. I am going to try a 72hr fast starting tomorrow and I will be having coffee with cream and bone broth. :slight_smile:

I’m fasting too. I have noticed that after a few days of fasting I don’t really desire coffee. I also learned from my last long fast that if you get the powdered chicken bouillon and put a teaspoon or two in warm water and drink it, that it helps with dizziness. Dr. Phinney discusses it on one of his YouTube videos. Good luck!!! You can do it!!!

I “fast” w HWC in coffee. Don’t really like coffee but do like HWC so it’s a fat fast. Even still I barely get through it. . Started again today.

Just did my first 24 hour fast today. I just had coffee and lots of water. And then an electrolyte powder with no carbs. Did not think I could do it but I was fine. I think I can incorporate this into a regular weekly plan.
