I went out of town this weekend and tried extended fast for first time. Had bullet coffee Friday morning Did really good until midway through drive back and a McDonald’s caught my eye. Not only did I break the fast I had a qp with bun. I avoided pizzas waffles and tons of sugary treats all weekend and screwed it all on the drive home. So mad at myself for this but it did happen. Has anyone had experience with this? What could I have done to swerve this terrible idea? Why did my brain think this was cool
Fasting mess up
When you fall off the horse, just get back on. Every fasting hour is an hour your body spent with lower insulin levels, less glycolation, increased sensitivity, etc.
I can personally testify to the good results that can be obtained by extended fasting, even if it’s interrupted by a junk meal.
One thing is being prepared. Carry items that you could eat if you end up breaking a fast. If you end up breaking a fast with fast food, at least make it low carb. The bun doesn’t even taste like anything. Try working up to the extended fast.
Don’t sweat it. You gave into temptation because you were hungry. Just note the following next time you come across a similar situation.
-
Remind yourself why your doing the fast. I write down 5 benefits I hope to get from a fast. Examples: Better insulin sensitivity, more lipolysis (fat breakdown), gets you back into keto quickly, autophagy (detox and repair process that your body starts getting into after 24 hours of fasting), mental benefits (removed brain fog, improves brain plasticity, and helps with depression)
-
Remind yourself that hunger comes in waves. Hungry is triggered by Grehlin, a hormone released in your stomach and gut to trigger appetite and feelings of hunger up top in the brain. Drink some water, tea and have some salt if your dehydrated. Wait a few minutes. Chances are you’ll feel better.
-
Avoid fast food drive throughs. Go to a Grocery store or walk inside the restaurant if you have to. Convenience of using a drive through is often a response to certain stimuli (in this case the golden arches). I would avoid fast food altogether. Your brain needs time to break this connection between stimuli and response (seeing a McDonald’s and reminding yourself of the good times even though the food there is damaging and the pleasure is temporary, but going through the drive through anyways).

Have a backup plan. If you’re still hungry and none of the above works, then break your fast with a small keto meal…some bone broth and apple cider vinegar with water works wonders for me. You’ll still get most of the benefits of fasting.
If none of these work and you get the burger anyways, then simply acknowledge what happened, identify why it happened, write it down and know that it might happen again next time… However, next time, you’ll be prepared.
Drink some apple cider vinegar and lemon juice right after you eat a carb heavy meal… This will help balance your blood sugar levels.Add cinnamon if you can handle it.
As always, Keep calm, carry on.
Cheers
I had a lovely bacon cheeseburger yesterday, breaking a 100 hour fast. But I asked for no bun, making it a really low carb meal. I’d say all the advice to not visit the golden arches at all is the best advice, but you could have immediately taken the bun and thrown it away, taking yourself from ‘falling off the horse’ to simply breaking your fast early.
Great idea from @kib - I’ve totally done this. Bacon cheeseburger with the works from the drive through. I tossed the bun out the window to the birds, who dove in and fought over it.
I’ve made the same mistake too, and b en so mad at myself! Hardest is staying at my sister’s house; she stocks stuff for her kids like pound cake and lemon bars and cinnamon coffee cake. AUGH!!
I now load up on all my very favorite keto snacks and take them with me. I even budget for it so I can have fabulous stuff I don’t eat every day in order to have some magnificent keto dish to look forward to. Works for me. In fact I now have to take or make extra of my keto faves for everyone because they all figure out how tasty it is and dive right in!
I think the incentive of a really wonderful keto fast-breaking meal is a great idea. Who wants to spoil a great fast with a happy meal when roast lamb, or smoked salmon or brussel sprouts and bacon, or whatever your keto delight might be awaits you as congratulations.
This. It is absolutely doable. You were obviously hungry, and tempted to give in. No dramas, just try to make the food as close to keto as possible. In fact, get yourself 3 burgers, throw away the buns, and enjoy.
I am on a fast day today, and I am having lunch. Why? I am not feeling 100%, just a bit “off”, not quite right. This is perfectly OK. It is my body telling me that fasting today is not what it wants.
I will fast again another day.
Cheers
Alec
Feeling better about myself this morning made it 52 hours, weigh the same as when I left which is an accomplishment in itself. Usual 6 hour driving trip would have been filled with convenience store purchases of chips, chex mix, candy bars etc… Today I will wait till dinner to eat then a long workout this evening to get back on my feet.
My reading this morning says I am still in ketosis which is a surprise but that is all that had eaten yesterday.
