Fasting ketosis

#1

After some time observing keto levels with a ketonix a clear pattern has emerged. Keto levels are always lower at the end of a daily fast 16 - 20 hrs.
The minimum 12 hr fast sees the ketonix still register high levels.
I can only presume I am highly insulin sensitive because I can eat icecream and still register high keto levels before and after the shorter evening 12hr fast.
On the other hand I can eat no carbs at all and after 16 -20 hrs fasting the ketonix will only measure moderate levels at best.

Ketones (especially breath or urine) aren’t useful in that capacity. Blood glucose levels are used to determine insulin sensitivity. Take measurements before a meal, then 1 hour and 2 hours later. Metabolically heathy people will see a significant rise, followed by a precipitous decline back to basal levels. People who are metabolically deranged will have elevated levels many hours later.

Futhermore, there is no general consensus on optimal ketone levels. Fasting BG should be below 85 mg/dL.

I’ve found my ketonix to register levels that are at odds with what should be the case quite often. Usually I fast all day and register below ketosis levels on the ketonix, while the blood meter still registers nutritional ketosis. The ketonix will also give you false ketone readings after you’ve eaten a large number of carbs. That could be what is happening with the ice cream in your case. The only time I can reliably get a high reading on my ketonix is 1-2 hours after my evening meal, when I’ll usually blow anywhere from the mid 20s to the mid 60s. That always confused me because I assumed that I should see a slight drop in ketone levels after eating. After all, there’s a insulin response even to ketogenic foods, however small. The blood meter once again reflected what I expected to see though, nutritional ketosis at a somewhat reduced level.
