Fasting just after carb vacation

(Pri) #1

Can I start fast just after 4 days of high carb?

Why not, you can start the day after to get back in ketosis faster. :cowboy_hat_face:

Reason I asked since I m not fat adapted it will be hard to do fast?

Hard but not impossible. Depends how impatient you are to “undo” the 4 days carb. I would probably do the fast but that’s because of a lack of patience for me. In the bigger picture of keto it probably doesn’t matter as long as you resume your keto eating.

Probably wouldn’t be real pleasant but I have heard lots of people fasting for a day to burn off glycogen stores and get back into ketosis with minimal down time and feeling bad. Although you’re not fat adapted and fasting isn’t recommended for newbies a one day fast won’t mess up your metabolism. Or you could just go back to your normal keto eating and not worry about fasting, you’ll be back on track anyway Pri. :cowboy_hat_face:

I am not new for sure I have lost 75-80 pounds since December, never fasted though. My ideal/goal weight is 120-125. I reached 135 then went on vacation after almost more than 2 years(had 2 kids). I took it easy and enjoyed with my husband(he never diets) he is fit person and sometimes he gets annoyed me picking on everything or asking too many questions to waiters. So I just let it go. Scale shows 7 pounds up. So wants to start fasting since last pounds are hard to loose anyway. Any expert advice is welcome since I m feeling crappy.

My experience with multi-day fasts (non-keto) is that day 2 is the most painful. That’s when ‘carb hunger’ is at its worst. By the morning of day 3 you’re getting back into ketosis and the carb hunger is replaced by ‘keto hunger’ which is not painful at all, more of a gentle reminder that you should eat again sometime soon. :smirk:

I did a lot of 36hr fasts before I was fat adapted. It was often “grit your teeth” time in the evenings, but it is quite possible.

Jason Fung treats his patients with a regimen of feasting on real foods and fasting. He isn’t necessarily a keto doctor and I expect most of his patients are far from fat adapted when they begin fasting, and he’s had a lot of success.

Fasting is a lot easier when fat adapted because we have much greater control of our hunger and cravings as well as a consistent supply of energy but there’s no harm in trying periodic short fasts as long as we convince our body that famine is not a real threat.

Physically, there should not be a problem - not as easy as when you are deep in Keto but still doable.

It is probably good to try out also - fasting may be necessary to reach your goal weight, as well as being a good option maintenance.

Being ultra-strict on maintenance (scale watching and cutting on slight upticks) might be one way to go but, being a bit less strict and fasting 1 day a week might be easier long-term.

The simple answer, of course, is yes. I don’t know anything about you, but going from a “carb vacation” to a “fast” makes me wonder if a less erratic course of action is a better one? Steady as she goes.
