I’m doing a fasting insulin test which would usually be in the morning but just wondering with the dawn effect is this the best time to get an accurate picture of your results.
Fasting Insulin Test timing
Your fasting insulin will be what it will be with or without dawn effect Can I ask what you’re hoping to learn from the test?
That’s an interesting idea. I usually get them done in the morning, but did have one in the afternoon (at the doctor’s office). It wasn’t too bad. But I’ve not taken them in the morning and then later to see what happens.
Insulin is pulsatile, so I’m not sure when is the best time, if you’re fasting. Just theorizing here, but I think you’d have physiological insulin resistance in the morning, which is one reason your blood sugar is higher. This is probably answered somewhere on here, about insulin resistance, but I see he has a bunch of blog posts. It’ll take a bit of effort to ferret out the answer:
Doctor asked for it as a measure against the last test. To check my metabolic markers have improved but as I have to pay for it I’m not keen unless it is achieving something.
If you’re checking it against a previous number then it’s not a terrible test but it’s worth keeping in mind that fasting insulin levels can move about a fair bit. Your best bet would be to take the test under as near to exact conditions as you did the first time It won’t tell you nothing - it just won’t give you the fullest picture possible.
Ideally our doctors would test our post prandial insulin levels so we could see how much we produce in response to a meal but it seems few doctors are willing to do that. You’re actually pretty lucky to have a doctor who is interested in testing your fasting levels!
