Fasting first timer

(eat more) #21

keep in mind i am not telling you what to do…just my opinion
i do think you are trying to change too many things at once…you are healing from a trauma…you aren’t in your normal exercise routine…changing your eating…eliminating things…(which makes it really hard to troubleshoot when a lot of things are different all at once)

if you are hungry eat! even if it’s just a teaspoon of almond butter.
we want to keep our metabolism on the road to recovery

pre keto i was working out 4-6 days/week (not whimpy stuff either) and i have done every diet known to man or woman (almost LOL).
now i eat when i am hungry (within my carb goals) and workout when my body tells me to…sometimes that’s once a week and sometimes its 5 days…sometimes it’s just kettlebell swings…sometimes it’s a full body weight circuit plus kettlebell swings, medicine ball slams, jumprope, and whatever else sounds fun :joy:

the point of my rambling…just KCKO…it’ll happen…and a lot easier if you just trust that it will.

p.s. i didn’t just magically wake up one day and “let it go” (don’t sing)…but it did happen

(What The Fast?!) #22

UPDATE!!! I just found 2 articles (one included a study) that showed intermittent fasting actually helps to heal burn wounds!!

Re: stevia - I decided to cut it out because I wasn’t getting fat adapted and because I read The Obesity Code where Fung says it needs to go. :frowning: (But I get what you’re saying.)

Okay cool - thanks for your advice (I kind of needed someone to tell me it’s okay to eat!)

(eat more) #23

it’s definitely easier and recommended to fast once fat adapted (i think i missed answering that earlier)

edit: definitely eat if you are going to fast…don’t go into a fast already hungry.

How do you know if you are insulin resistant?

#25

@mikki has already given you a lot of good advice!

The definitive way of determining insulin resistance (IR) is a fasting insulin above 13 uIU/mL, but anyone who’s overweight probably has some level of IR since insulin seriously inhibits the release and burning of fatty acids from fat cells. Higher levels of blood sugar, especially as seen through the HbA1C. There are people who are Thin Outside and Fat Inside (TOFI) who are IR, but not overweight and the commonality seems to be the visceral fat stored inside the abdomen instead of the subcutaneous fat that’s just underneath the skin.

Echoing Mikki, if you’re hungry eat and other than knowing you’re fat-adapted by consistently detecting higher level of blood ketones, another way is to spontaneously fast when just not feeling hungry.

In the beginning when I was experimenting with intermittent fasting, I did push the fasting window longer even when I was hungry and often that was just because my body was expecting to eat, but given your healing wounds, you might want to try keep meals about 12 hours apart in order to get enough nutrients and minimize insulin, and when you aren’t hungry, just let the window get longer.

So my opinion if you’re trying to fast and struggling with hunger while dealing with healing, I’d push through most hunger feelings between meals until 12 hours, but persistent “intrusive thoughts of food” are probably from you’re body stimulating appetite and telling you that it’s not ready for a fast and it’s time to eat.

(What The Fast?!) #26

Fasted from 2pm yesterday (but did have a tea with a splash of heavy cream). It’s about 8am here now. This is the first time I’ve been above 0.6. Woo hoo!

(What The Fast?!) #27

You guys!!! I went to the Burn Center yesterday and the doctor said healing time looks like only another 7-10 days!! It was supposed to be another month, so I’m pretty stoked. He also said I can work out now, to my comfort level, so I’m going to jump on my bike this weekend, go to yoga, and maybe a HiiT boot camp or TRX class if I’m feeling good!!

Still not allowed in the sun for at least 6 months, but it could be much worse. I saw a woman in the burn unit whose burns were on her face and I immediately felt incredibly grateful that mine are in an area that is more easily concealed.

awesome news! (stay hydrated LOL)

#29

You don’t need to load up with a pre-fast feast for a 24 hour feast. In fact I would disagree with the road trip metaphor @BillJay used, and suggest that the feasting (such as it is) only come after the fast, even for longer durations. Feasting first will only delay your glycogen depletion and other metabolic processes that need to occur before all the repair functions kick in.

(What The Fast?!) #30

Ooh, interesting! I feel like once I’m fully fat adapted, fasting will be so much easier.

(eat more) #31

for sure…and probably just happen naturally without any kind of plan

i still say don’t start a fast already restricted…like at the very least eat “normally”

(What The Fast?!) #32

Today the fast is happening naturally, mainly because I doubt I could keep anything down.

(eat more) #33

:joy:

sorry you feel like :poop:…lesson learned…maybe LMAO

(i never learned or at the very least “forgot” how shitty i felt after super fun times…i’m too scared to drink on keto since i mostly felt really bad after drinking not keto :joy:)

(What The Fast?!) #34

Hey @mikki you’re so fine you blow my mind!

I wanted to tell that I moved IF window yesterday. I ate dinner early (before the gym) and then skipped brekkie today (just black coffee) and I just hit 20 hours! Woo hoo! I was planning on doing a 20/4 IF but I may wait til 24 hour just because… Dude…I get what you all mean about fasting, it’s kind of addicting. Like, I don’t want to break it now. Plus, I don’t just want any old food, I want to make an amazing meal.

(eat more) #35

yeah what’s 4 hours right? :joy:
and then i get thoughts like “bed isn’t that far off…why not just eat in the morning…i’ll for sure eat in the morning?” and then i wake up not hungry lol

(What The Fast?!) #36

I ate. I can try again another day.
