I fast sometimes twice a week (24hrs) and towards end of fast maybe 20+ hrs I feel like energy level is zip. Do any of you guys or gals have same feeling. I have been doing this for months so it’s not new. I also do 16hrs + every day. EOD not feeling good at all
Fasting and not feeling good
What is EOD (eating on demand?)?
You may not be fat adapted yet. That took me approx. 4.5 months of strict, clean keto, which was a surprise (even though people here had said it could take that long). When you reach that low point, can you do something to take your mind off of it? I do a 48-hour fast once a week. When I feel “hungry,” it will usually go away if I do something or get my mind off of it.
Good luck.
EOD…every other day.
Like that JUDDD plan. Eat full food one day as needed and restrict kcals to like 500 the next. Another plan out there to tell you ‘how to do it’ per their requirements.
Eat. For heaven’s sake eat.
Follow a good keto plan and EAT! You do not need this forced eating plan until your body can handle it.
thing is we think we know when it can handle it…we don’t til we are there…ya know what I mean
There is a great keto plan with your name on it. Adopt that, eat, and then give it time for your body to adjust.
I don’t know your history on it all but eat Enlighten us on longer keto and EOD if you can later.
I have been on strict keto for 11 months now. I do know how to eat but the fasting part bothers me. I have read for weeks about keto long before I started it. I follow keto to a tee. Listened to dr Fung and many others on fasting
I don’t enjoy feeling unwell or low energy…if that would begin to happen, then I eat. I am in the practice of just not eating if I am not hungry and eating if I am…I let my body tell me what it needs.
20-24 hours might be the time when your glycogen stores are being completely exhausted.
Are you solidly in ketosis before starting one of these (per a blood ketone meter)?
If not, it could be a sign that you are not in ketosis - basically experiencing a min keto flu each time.
@Luciee65 You’re not alone in feeling that way after about 24 hours… are you physically lean, by any chance?
After 11 months of diligent carb-avoidance, there’s little doubt that you would be fat-adapted. The question then becomes whether you are like some of us (e.g., Lean Mass Hyper-Responders) who have a natural discomfort (hunger!) after not eating anything of caloric value for about 24 hours or more.
How’s your LDL been doing since you started keto? If either LDL-P and/or LDL-C it has spiked appreciably from pre-keto levels, that could be indicative of your being an LMHR - in which case, again, you simply may not be comfortable fasting the way many others are.
… In which case: don’t.
Yes I am in ketosis and I do the mojo test. I ALWAYS stay in ketosis. I use to check it 1/2 times every day but I slowed way down as I am always in it and always high over 1.5 sometimes over 2. I do not believe I have keto flu. Why always end of 24 fast ten minutes after I eat I feel better
That’s probably what you need! Are you drinking a lot of water? Water will flush out your electrolytes, which will leave you feeling weak very quickly.
It might be psychological - try a 48 hour fast and see if you only get hungry at hours 44-48 (i.e. anticipating intake is a powerful thing).
Another thing you might try is that if you are going dinner to dinner for your 24 hour fast - switch it to breakfast to breakfast.
This is so true. You just have to find by trial and error what works for you and what you can live with comfortably. Start with the basics and modify as you go. If you look at this as a journey and not a destination, then time loses its importance - days turn into weeks, turn into months, etc., and at some point you find it has become very workable.
This is the IDM Fasting protocol that I am following at the moment, until November 30th. Since it was made by Dr. Jason Fung and he uses it for his patients, I figured I would try it too. @Ilana_Rose told me about it, and @monsterjuice is doing it with me as well:
I am doing 44 hours on the fasting days, as I want to keep my 20:4 TMAD IF that I have been doing for quite some time now.
Thanks momof5 but I’m not sure about 44 hrs. I get to not feeling well after 20 hrs. Until I get this feeling bad for the 24 I don’t want to do more.
Oh okay =). Well daily I normally do 20:4 --I eat lunch at 1pm and then supper at 4:30 so no food daily from 5pm-1pm and that is a 20 hour daily fast IF -maybe something like that would work for you? I hope you find something that will and you can feel comfortable with. Some people really hate fasting and never do and still succeed well with Keto, so don’t pressure yourself. I personally like Fasting (a bit too much actually and have to stop myself at times) but it is definitely not for everyone! Just do whatever you are feeling good with =).
Well that is great, that is still really good. Maybe since that works for you already, it is enough to stick with for now? I know that there are some members on here that have been doing Keto for quite a while and still successfully do 3 meals a day. If you have found a good pattern for yourself that is working well, maybe that is enough fasting for you for now =).
Could be so many things…
-
Your not use to having low blood sugars?
-
Not enough body fat?
-
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia (POTS)? Not enough epinephrine (adrenal fatigue of the HPA-axis and/or too much melatonin) to lift your body from the laying or sitting position, very typical for fasting too much or too long or extensively when your not use to it and under-eating carbohydrates when you do eat?
