Fascinating from George Orwell

This just popped up in my Twitter feed, a fascinating piece of commentary from Orwell. This was written in 1937, Sugar was only just starting it’s advance and he basically called it right.

Now this is a political comment but what stands out is how he saw the use of Sugar as a way of being ‘tasty’ to make people feel less humdrum about their lives. We know why because of the science now, it is a drug, it is addictive and same impact as Heroin or Alcohol …

Big Sugar always knew this …

Orwell had a crystal ball. How else could be so spot on about what is happening this century :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: He was brilliant and ahead of his time. 1984,a first edition copy is one of my prized possessions. And Animal Farm is being played out daily these days.

He wrote some great essays and articles, often political, but also often about everyday things like making tea and going to the pub.

There is (at least one) where he gives the “recipe” for making a perfect pot of tea, so it wasn’t the tea per se he disapproved of (and most people (in the UK) drank it with sugar in those days).

My mother has told me about the awful margarine they had as well in those days. Terrible stuff.

Many of his essays/articles are online and should be find-able with a google search.

30 years later the USDA took this up
