Family dont believe me

#21

Hi Jenny
I love your phrase " as I delve deeper in the keto metabolic rabbit hole. I feel like a little terrier that has burrowed so far down the hole it is stuck and cant get back out, but at the same time doesn’t want to because of all the goodies and exciting things just a bit further down." It’s absolutely magical and true! You should write a diary of your personal journey; you have a way with words…

Like you I’ve spent many years in the medical area and I’ve also lived with T1D for the past 45 years. So I’m busy re-educating myself too. I’ve never felt fitter, particularly mentally than I do now. So much energy. Only been eating keto since second week of February. Your family will see for themselves ( my hubby has decided to lower his carbs as he’s seen the changes in me). I didn’t need to shout it from the rooftops (even though I want to!) . Good luck with your journey and thank you for making me smile this morning!!!

Hello @buffy
thankyou for your kind words and well done on your achievements!!
The scale alone does not measure our success on keto (thank gawd for that, cos I would be deemed a dismal failure if that were the case!!)
So happy you got a smile from my ramblings

So, jennyellen, I have to ask… how is your husband? Is he following you with a keto diet?

#24

Hello Brian,

you are very kind to ask, but sadly my husband died 3 months after diagnosis, just over 4 years ago.
Part of my motivation to go on this journey of health improvement is so that my kids dont have to lose another parent too soon.

Jenny xx

I’m so sorry, Jenny. :frowning:

I must have missed something in the dates and conversations. I didn’t realize. Please forgive me.

Glad to know you’re on a good path. You’re kids have an awesome mom!

Many blessings to you,

Brian

All good, Brian
I didnt mention that he died, so my fault.

Patience
Say nothing and wait till they ask,
They will ask at some point.
Just remember when they say “so the new figure is another diet!?” that’s them asking.
Have a balanced quiet response.
Then more patience. You’ll win them over.

I am rowing the same family boat
Your not alown

Your post made me laugh because I can relate in so many ways. Slowly but surely, they are starting to believe me. However, I don’t waste my time trying to convince them with words anymore.

I finally decided to just chill and focus on improving myself for a while. I am having regular comprehensive blood tests. I want to show my dad (who is a family practice MD and VERY skeptical) that his “medical advice” and ideas about nutrition and my thyroid and fatty liver are wrong. This may be kind of silly, but I feel like he needs to see the data and understand very clearly, as does the rest of my family. But that will come later on this year as I still have weight to lose. Keep up your good lifestyle and hard work, and they will come around eventually.

The campaigns of the big food and big drug companies, often aided by governments and the medical establishment, have been successful - to the detriment of legions of people. The mantra of low-fat, “healthy grains,” many servings of carbohydrates each day, etc., is deeply ingrained.

In my family, nobody other than me really believes in ketogenic eating. It’s a fad, it’s too high-fat, it’s too high-protein. “Too few carbohydrates to balance it out.” <-- had to laugh at that.

Some family members are lean and healthy, others are in bad shape and getting worse. My mother-in-law has lost weight and reversed Type 2 Diabetes, and staying away from sugar has helped her there, but she’s not to the point of cutting out refined pasta, for example. My weight loss has been noticed, and I try not to go overboard talking about keto. Nobody likes it when people get all ‘preachy.’

In the end, the individual, to a large extent, must find their own way.

Once this WOE clicks it feels like you’ve found the ancient scrolls for metabolic health.

It’s hard not to “yell from the rooftops” to friends and loved ones. Even when I could see peoples eyes glazing over, I found it difficult to “reign it in” at first. I was in a way pushing them away from keto with good intentions.

Both my brothers have reversed their T2D. And both of my parents in their 80’s (while not fully keto) have significantly lowered their carb intake, lost weight and improved their health.

Good enough for me to KCKO.

Actually I was wondering… if your family doesn’t believe, they can serve as a big obstacle.

For example

  1. There are low-fat version of food, like butter, cheese… But you went to buy full-fat version. They will be like “aiyo, why spend the money to buy all those (unhealthy) stuff? We still got this and that (points to all the low-fat version)”. It is not easy to ignore, especially when the fridge has no enough space to store two versions. <_< (So to avoid this situation, I kinda forced myself to finish all the low-fat versions and rush to buy the full-fat version long time ago, or else I cannot justify my reasons of buying.)
  2. Food preparation and Eating out… and lots.

So sometime it is not that we want to KCKO then we can, without giving a f*ck to family. Sometime they can be a pain in the *ss.

I control all the food that comes into the house and do all the cooking. It is not a problem. While we used to go out to dinner and eat out often we rarely go out anymore. Not a problem. If they do not like what I make they can have a sandwich, cook themselves eggs or pasta. I do keep pasta and rice around but I do not cook it. I have reduced but not eliminated breakfast cereals. That will be after the summer probably

Hello @cloudy,
I live alone so I control all the food that comes into my hkme.
There are no non-keto foods here, unless my family comes to visit.
Then they have to bring what they want - cereal, bread, fruit etc.
Mostly they are happy to have big roast meat meals with lots of veggies - they bring the potatoes though - or bacon and eggs
My family is not a pain in the *ss or anywhere else - they just think this is another one of Mums fad diets.

I’m not preaching at all. I haven’t lost all my weight yet. It’s “another diet” until I finish losing, and keep it off. Then I expect questions will be coming my way. But far easier to wait and just eat as I like, while thinking about how things could be down the road than to argue about it until I get to where I’m going.

Do not worry, time Will do the job. They’ll come to you asking, maybe in a year or two, but they Will come !
