My current challenge is this… Now that I’ve lost enough that people are beginning to notice, and they want to know what I’m doing. So I tell them. In Chinese. But the culinary culture here is very different. Food is seen as medicine, but most people don’t really understand protein, fat, carbs. One friend carefully and respectfully listened to my explanation… Then carefully ordered food for us. Total carbfest. She really wants to know. Any tips for culturally appropriate explanations? I don’t want to give half understood help that harm more than help.

I would explain it in terms of blood sugar. Some foods raise your blood sugar and some do not. You don’t have to explain in detail about insulin response and such. Just that you cannot eat foods that have sugar or turn into sugar in your body. Explain that foods like rice, breads, and grains turn into sugars in your body, even though they may not specifically have sugar in them.

I sort of use this way of speaking to my 8 year old. I’m not suggesting your friends are not more intelligent than an 8 year old, only that is is a very simple and easy to understand way of explaining Keto. At least as an introduction. Then as they start to grasp those concepts you can go into more detail (things that have carbs raise blood sugar etc.)
