A while back i got an oxymeter because it’s cheap and something else to measure. If you get one read some websites about how to interpret the results, not always simple. I can raise my my level from 95% to 100% by a few minutes of deep breathing. 6 months of walking everyday reduced overnight resting heart rate from the mid 60’s to the mid 50’s. Does the lower HR translate to better cardio vascular and lung health? Probably but…

Most lung exercises focus on breathing out, Breathe out slowly as long as you can, get all the air out of your lungs. When you have respiratory issues, the issue is not that you can’t breathe in, the issue is that you cannot expel all the air, leaving less and less room in your lung to receive the air you breathe in. Then you are “short of breath”. Also, try to do it with your diaphragm, not muscles that are higher up. You should be able to breathe in and out without your chest muscles.

The most common exercise is to breathe in through your nose, and breathe out through pursed lips for twice as long. Pay attention to your belly, or place an object on it, it should rise and fall with your breaths.

Do this 5 to 10 minutes a day.

It’s also very relaxing, but it strengthens your lungs and teaches them to deal better with situations where you are short of breath (like pneumonia etc) Learning this controlled breathing can be priceless. Remaining calm and breathing in the above fashion can save your life when you are short of breath.

Something I noticed while on the treadmill at the gym. The Treadmill monitors Heart rate, If I was at 125bpm and took 4 or 5 deep breaths, my bpm would drop over the next 15 seconds 5 or more bpm. I suspect that’s normal, but I was a little surprised by it.
