Excellent news, but less than excellent doctor

I have to share my experience with my mother’s new doctor (and some awesome news). BTW this is the fourth doctor we’ve had in the last three years as they all keep quitting and we keep getting passed along to the next resident in line.

Quick history: My mother was diagnosed with T2D several years ago. She had severe alcohol and sugar addiction, which also contributed to her developing dementia, which led to me caring for her. Over the years I have taken more and more control over her health, first getting her off the alcohol. In 2017 I was finally able to get her food intake under control and began limiting her sugar intake. Earlier this year she was taken off two diabetic meds (Glipizide and Pioglitazone) and currently only takes Metformin for the diabetes. In April 2018 she moved in with me and I was able to get her eating LCHF. She’s since lost 20 pounds, her hypothyroidism has stabilized and she’s resolved all of her vitamin deficiencies. Awesome progress!

Fast forward to our appointment this week. First, the doctor asks if anyone’s ever talked to us about going on a statin “because most diabetics over age 50 are on a statin.” No looking at lipid panel (which, btw is normal), just sees that a) patient is over 50 and b) patient is diabetic. Unbelievable. Fortunately doctor quickly says “we can talk about it next time,” so I pick my jaw up off the floor and don’t make an issue of it…I will just come armed with science when we return… if we return, because the story doesn’t end there.

Doctor calls me next day to report mom’s test results…Now, at one point in time my mother’s A1c was 16.8 (for real, not a typo…see pic below)…so I was ECSTATIC to hear that her A1c came back this week at 5.4! I’m thrilled! Doctor should be thrilled, too…right? “OMG…how did you do it? That’s amazing!!” No. Doctor tells me this is a very low result for a diabetic and she is concerned. Hmmm, I ponder…No insulin, no blood glucose lowering meds…so what’s the concern? She cannot elaborate other than just repeat it’s just low for a diabetic. In the end doc decides to cut Metformin dose in half and see us back in six months. I read these crazy stories so often, but honestly never thought I’d see it firsthand.

Anyway, I wanted to share what I know is totally exciting news with others who could understand and appreciate the significance. I’m so grateful to have a resource like this one to keep me sane when doctors (and others) talk crazy at me. Thanks for this site!

Great results well done you…and your mum. Glad to see that doctors in the US can be as dumb as doctors in the UK on occasion…

Great news about your mom’s health. Kudos to you for caaring enough to be so involved. I had the same “that’s too low” conversation with a doc where I work. Since he’s actually the director, and there’s no MD after my name, I just let it go. Weird line of thinking if you ask me.

So 5.4 is low for a diabetic because…she’s not diabetic anymore??? Yes, I supposed in a weird twisted way, it is low for a diabetic. Because they’re not diabetic. What a very strange comment to make, as though her A1C should stay elevated for life, and how dare your mother lower it.

Good for you for helping her get it lowered in a natural way. I’m sure she feels better for it. (BTW, when I started testing my A1C, it was 5.4 too - I’m not diabetic.)

Surprised you didn’t get the “Just keep doing what you’re doing” without the slightest curiosity about what you’re doing.

These stories are all unbelievable. I always feel like I have to see through the anger I initially feel to just how ridiculous it all is. You’ve done an amazing job, no words. I sure hope there are other options in your area for doctors.

I… wow… that leaves me almost speechless. The reasoning is— what, exactly? “I’m concerned because she doesn’t have the signs of this [terrible] disease. Very worrisome.”

Anyway, congratulations to you and your mom! This is WONDERFUL!!!

Either

  • she forgot that your mother is no longer on insulin, or else

  • she forgot that the only reason you want serum glucose to be high is to give a cushion in case the patient overdoses on insulin and glucose starts to drop (a hypoglycemic episode is no fun, and a patient who collapses could hurt herself)., or else

  • she is an idiot.

I got this one from my doc. Not the slightest interest in what I was doing. SMH

Paul, Paul, Paul,

Where is your deductive reasoning. It’s elementary! An A1C of 5.4 is too low for a diabetic because now she can’t be treated with drugs. Reversing diabetes isn’t an option. No money can be made in reversing diabetes. Even more so, the drug companies need doctors to push more scripts. I don’t care what anyone says. Doctors are getting kick back by pharmaceutical companies just like politicians are getting from lobbyists. Both should be illegal.

I’m not feeling well so forgive the candor. Your doctor is an idiot.

ETA: 1. that’s wonderful about what you’ve accomplished, absolutely wonderful. give yourself a huge pat on the back. 2. I’d definitely go somewhere else. Maybe this doctor is taking a statin, it surely sounds like impaired functioning to me. She can’t deal with treating “the diabetic” because the person, your mother, is no longer technically a diabetic? Fine, enjoy your day, goodbye Dr. Dummkopf. :rage:

Ahh, I see I’m actually seconding Paul’s diagnosis here. Two votes for idiot.

You are absolutely right, Bob. I really dropped the ball on that one!

Just my 2 cents…I would never set foot in that doctor’s office again. If they do not realize she reversed her diabetes, then she clearly is not worth dealing with IMHO (make that 5 votes)

That being said - way to go mom!! Those results are fantastic!

(Trudy) #17

Congratulations! You have reversed your mums diabetes with knowledge and love. Amazing blood results, proof right there that Keto is a way of life.

(Jane) #18

Congratulations!!!

Your doctor apparently hasn’t heard that diabetes can be cured, not just “managed”.

Good for you and your Mom for beating the disease with keto!

(Sophie) #19

Your mom is incredibly lucky to have you as her health advocate!
