Ending a fast

(Tim) #1

So every time I end a fast, it’s like I’m having the “Keto flu” all over again. I usually do a water fast every couple of weeks but I’m always leery to start because I’m always dashing for the bathroom as I’m ending my fast.

Am I ending it wrong or what and how should I start eating again?

P.S. Dr. visit yesterday and I was at 5.6 A1C although my LDL was at 140. Only been Keto since Oct. 1st and I’m loving it, down 33#, planning on another 70#

Welcome @G_pa-of2!

I have found the best way to deal with this issue is to hold off breaking the water fast until I have a nice block of time alone in the afternoon / evening (waiting an extra half-day or full-day if necessary).

After trying different foods (eggs, meat, vegetables, yes-dairy, no-dairy, etc.) in small and medium amounts spaced out over different times (30 minutes up to 2 or 3 hours) I came to the conclusion that (for me) no matter what it is hit-or-miss.

It seems that restarting digestion from a completely stopped state can give one that “dashing for the bathroom” issue. Even if you think you’ve cracked the case “10 nuts, wait an hour, 2 eggs, wait an hour, a small meal” - I wouldn’t assume that because it works a couple of times that it will always work (i.e. don’t trust a pattern like that and start an hour-long car drive).

Congratulations on the 33!

I’ve never been able to stop it, so I break at least by lunch, to have a lot of time before I have to go anywhere.

This WOE seems to constantly evolve. Of late, even OMAD isn’t safe. About got caught out when a friends car broke down and he needed picked up. Didn’t even consider that i had just eaten. Made it back home but can’t get the damn key in the lock while loudly repeating OMG OMG OMG!!! Finally getting in and the dog thinks it sounds like playtime and attacks. NO MISS LUMPY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

It’s kinda nice to know I’m not the only one or that I thought I was breaking it wrong. Basically what I’m hearing is that I need to do some experiments and see what works for me. Anywhere from timing to amounts to types of food to start my digestive system up again.

And thank you the 33 is only the beginning, my ultimate goal is 100# but I’m not focused on just that. I do the smaller goal of being excited for the 10# losses. Which seems to be the regular every week that I fast.

I love the question “how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” So I’m one day at a time, besides it’s taken a lifetime to get where I am now and there’s no better time than the present.

You know, some people have formulas for this sort of thing: if you fast X, you must drink calories for Y. I personally have a hard time with this. If I fast 4.5 days, I don’t want to drink calories for 2. I’ve even tried “gently” restarting, such as drinking stock/bone broth, then eating a little, then eating more. But I just want to eat, and that did not help a lot either. So, I usually just schedule it and bear it. It’s gotten shorter over time for me, but it’s still there.

I try to start gently after a prolonged fast with a small plate of olives, and/or macadamia nuts etc. but don’t have a formula.

Usually my fasts end due to a social occasion so I try to allow myself at least a half day break-in period. I haven’t had any memorable issues but I’m not willing to roll the dice either.
