Electrolytes for a newbie
Just salt your food with a decent quality salt, I like Celtic grey, others like Himalayan pink. Really no need to worry beyond that unless you start feeling bad.
Now I do yes, but this is longterm for me and I’m very active so need to.
I have an unflavoured electrolyte powder that I add to my water a few times a day, but because it works for me, not everyone will need to.
I do eat spinach practically everyday and I heavily salt it with himalayan salt so maybe I am getting what I need. I have heard drinking pickle juice also, is this just the brine that gherkins come in?
You’re probably doing just fine tbh, if you start getting headaches or a fuzzy head then you may need to look at things again.
There’s mixed reports on pickle juice, but yeah, as far as I know it’s just another way of getting sodium into people.
An easy way to get a bit of potassium is to use “lite” salt, which is a blend of sodium chloride and potassium chloride. For magnesium, Dr. Phinney recommends a brand called Slo-Mag. Though if you are outside the U.S., you may have to search a bit to find an equivalent brand.
These are probably unnecessary unless you start to get some symptoms from electrolyte imbalance. If that occurs, salt your food to taste. If you experience muscle cramps, you might want to supplement with some magnesium.
I like LMNT (well, some of their flavors, anyway), and if I’m fasting I can definitely tell a difference in the way I feel. I also have a history of cramping in my calves, and if I drink the extra electrolytes it seems to help prevent that.
