Electrolyte Recipe to combat nightly leg cramps

(FRANK) #1

Anybody out there have an EFFECTIVE electrolyte recipe to combat nightly leg cramps? I already take 400mg of magnesium in pill form. Drinking pickle juice seems to work pretty well but can’t keep up eating all those pickles. Thanks in advance for any responses.

I also take magnesium carbonate pills morning and night. But it takes the powdered version of Magnesium CITRATE in a glass of water each evening to stop my leg cramps. I use the brand called Calm. But I’m sure there are others.
Side benefit, it keeps me regular.

Mrs Pjam had this idea to spray us with magnesium! I wasn’t sure about this but it seems to have worked!

I get nightly cramps when I haven’t had enough salt. You may want to try taking a 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt before bed.

Agree… I add salt to my mag drink.

Good for you! Maybe there is a wide spectrum of spays. Never worked for, but kudos to you and for listening to your wife.

Coconut water + adequate salt on my meals seems to have done the trick for me.

Mega leg cramps here, due to a broken foot bone. Calm is a great leg cramp remedy. The best and fastest solution has been Theraworks Magnesium Foam. Rub it in, and the cramps disappear almost instantly.

Pretty high in sugar, no?

I used to take an electrolyte from the US with no sugar LMNT? I think it was but it is no longer possible to get it sent to Australia, no idea why.
So, I take salt tablets, 1 gram each and have a hot bath in half a kilo of Epsom salts each evening.
No potassium, haven’t found a way to get that here yet.

Currently I am on a carnivore diet and it is more important for me to take the salt tablets now I don’t have access to a sugar free electrolyte drink.

Tried my local health food store and they stock a sugar free electrolyte but it contains calcium which I won’t take cause I don’t believe I need it.

Avocados which I don’t currently eat are apparently high in potassium. If I wasn’t on a carnivore diet to address severe gut issues, that would be a solution for me.

Best wishes.

I have starting making my own electrolyte water this year. I add a tad of sea salt to a jug of water, and add the contents of one capsule of calcium lactate as well. Our tap water is essentially spring water from a mountain well, and is already hard. I do not know if this will help your cramps, but I have drunk much less this year. I just keep the jug in the fridge. I also supplement with ZMA and/or magnesium bisglycinate every night. This adds a little bit of calcium as well. I haven’t had a leg cramp since doing this. My wife can still get them, and she gets rid of them with this magnesium and calcium too.

I likes to use the Epsom salts (magnesium) because in a bath of hot water, you absorb the magnesium you need.
Only thing is to remember to shower off the Bath water on your skin afterwards, otherwise it is very drying.
I think I am getting calcium from meat…and I take vit d with K2M7 daily, so I absorb what calcium I do get into bones.
My keto (very) informed dietician asked me to take 3 grams of sodium a day as she said that is the baseline for me with no additional sodium from food.
I really liked the LMNT electrolyte with no sugar…it was very drinkable.
Aldi in Australia is having a sale on Epsom Salts currently…3Kg for $10.99. I am stocking up!!!

If I have an Epsom salt bath, I am protected from cramping for at least a day.
When I can’t have a bath, I take magnesium tabs.

I just started using the LMNT electrolyte drink mix (unflavored).
If you’re interested I found this recipe from their website.

  1. ½ teaspoon salt provides about 1 gram sodium.
  2. 400 mg potassium chloride provides about 200 mg potassium.
  3. ¼ teaspoon of magnesium malate provides about 60 mg magnesium.
  4. 2 tablespoons lime juice.
  5. Dash of stevia, to taste

That’s for the sweet version but leave out the juice and stevia and it’s just fine.
