Egg fast, don't feel like it's working

(Benjamin Street) #1

Hello. I’m on day four of an egg fast, and, to be honest, feel like I’m doing something wrong. I’m right on the border of obese and finally getting serious about losing the weight. Prior to this I was trying a liquid diet for two meals a day and salad for the third. I did lose some weight, but, wanted to try something to improve my results. So, I’m doing an egg fast and I feel like I’ve gained everything back in just a few short days. Here’s the fault in my logic: My scale broke right as I started, so, I have no idea if I’m actually gaining or it’s just a feeling. I am diabetic and my doctor has said that if I can stick with this and get the weight down, we can discuss scaling back my meds. I haven’t taken any insulin since I’ve been fasting, just taking my Janumet as prescribed. I can’t cut that out as my kidneys need the boost. I did 12 eggs, 3 slices of carb free cheese, and six tbsps butter the first three days, and ate only once a day in the afternoon, trying to incorporate intermittent fasting into thw plan. Today, day four, I figured it had to be calorie related, so I’ve scaled down to 8 eggs, 2 slices of cheese, and four tbsps of butter, eating the first half right at waking up, and the other half in the afternoon. My waistline feels as thick as it ever has. I’ve been drinking the water, although using a flavor additive to keep my sanity, which has no sugar/carbs/calories, so I don’t know how that would cause the problem. Is there something I’m not getting? Water is running through me as it should. I haven’t felt the keto flu and I don’t feel the jumpstart everyone has told me about. I just am supremely aware of my stomach and feel like I’m packing on weight rather than dropping. Please help.

Are you just starting Keto? You shouldn’t be doing any sort of fasting until you’re fat adapted. Just concentrate on keeping carbs to around 20g. Also you are SEVERELY calorie restricting. That will do you no favors. You should be eating to satiety.

Sorry I didn’t explain that very well. Yes, I’m just starting keto, hence, my rookie mindset. I have been trying to find my maintenance vs. burn caloric intake need. It was recommended I stay under the 2000 calorie/day, which the 12 egg ratio does for me. I honestly though I was calorie high and that was my problem. The first three days I was hungry throughout, but, today, even after paring down my intake, I’m not really feeling it. So, stop the fast and up the calories? Do you think that might be my answer? And thanks for the response.

This is a good start to learn with.

Just put the word fasting in any form out of your vocabulary for about 6 weeks until you’re fat adapted. Right now, just concentrate on keeping carbs under 20g and eating fat until you’re full. You should be eating a lot right now. You’re switching the fuel your body uses and it has to know it’s gonna keep coming in.

Try measuring your waist to keep track of progress from now on- when it shrinks, it’s such a boost!

Thanks. That’s what I’ve been doing rather than using the scale. The waistline has actually gone up sliggtly over the last five days. I don’t think I’m even losing the water weight. I feel bigger than I’ve ever felt, hence, the frustration. I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong. Haven’t eaten a carb in a week and I think I’m going in reverse.
